Launching GTV — oh yeah!

That isn’t a great title for this post… Haha! Who places ‘oh yeah’ in a title of an article? I used to question a lot of things too, especially those done outside of rules that we know — rules that we have adhered to for the longest time. And then, I realized that sometimes, I would just follow because I was scared of being different. If I did it this way, people might think I was crazy. If I did things that way instead, people might think that I’m a bit too much (either a non-conformist rebel or a fame-hungry biatch). I realized that a lot of things that I did was just so as to conform and to be exactly like the others. By doing this, I panicked because I wasn’t achieving anything — I wasn’t happy, I wasn’t moving at the pace I wanted, and most importantly, my goal of helping 500 Filipino entrepreneurs start their own businesses by 2020 was becoming unattainable. I needed to move fast.

Mentoring Session -- image from Jean of Angat Pilipinas Coalition for Financial Literacy

Mentoring Session — image from Jean of Angat Pilipinas Coalition for Financial Literacy

Why do I want to achieve this number?
If we, the Philippines, want to stay competitive, especially with the ASEAN Integration, we need to show the world that our economy is improving. The best way to help, in our own little way, is to create jobs for the unemployed. Jobs can be made if businesses succeed. If I can help aspiring entrepreneurs create 500 new businesses by 2020, given a conservative figure of 5 people per company, that will generate 2,500 jobs. I think that’s not bad for my own goal.

Why care so much?
If my daughter will live in a generation where the parents of these children have secured their children’s futures financially, and have concentrated on bringing up their children to be morally upright, independent, confident, happy and caring individuals, I will be happy. If i can help some people from our generation (probably the parentsof these batchmates of my daughter) achieve their entrepreneurial dreams, then maybe the future will be brighter. There is so much going on in the world (and country) today — violence, hunger, hatred that I think the least I could do is concentrate on things that would be of service to the country and the world even.

GTV Love the Leap

Launch of GTV
Fear is useless. That’s what I kept on telling myself during the past months of busily preparing for the launch of this YouTube Channel called GTV: Love the Leap. I created GTV with the purpose of trying to reach more aspiring entrepreneurs and those who want to start their own businesses all around the globe. I have been creating offline workshops, but I wanted to do so much more. I then thought that YouTube would be a good platform which I could use to reach more Filipinos all over the world. Each episode would deal with specific topics like digital marketing, branding, payment channels, etc. For each episode, it would either be me talking about my own experiences or I might have a guest/s that will contribute and share their ideas.

My Personal Challenges
I’m not really comfortable at speaking in front of the camera. I really admire how the likes of my idols Marie Forleo, Ramit Sethi, etc. do it. The shoot for the teaser, where I didn’t have to speak, was pretty easy. What was really difficult was the first day of the shoot for the episodes. Oh my! I had so many takes! I really appreciate my production team headed by my good friend, April Reyles (btw, she is a really really good producer — hire her!) and Joshua Reyles (and of course with my dear husband, Ej) because without them, I couldn’t have pulled this off. They were very professional and very patient with me. They understood that I wasn’t used to this kind of a thing. Oh my gosh! I really never knew that speaking in front of the camera as compared to speaking in a conference would be more difficult!

Can you feel the stress building up in this picture? haha!

Now, check out our teaser for GTV. We hope that you like it!

Personal Branding: Is it that Important?

The world that we live in has become so competitive. People compete for jobs. Products compete for attention. Advertisements are competing for attention from viewers, too. In the world of freelancing and solopreneurs, like myself, you really need to develop a good brand to stand out from the rest. That’s how Personal Branding comes in.

Why is Personal Branding important based on my experience? As you think about what brand you want for yourself, it helps you understand yourself better and it helps you create clearer goals for yourself and for your endeavor. I remember when we started developing our mobile applications, we all wanted to get into different things which were a little bit related to why we developed our start-up business. Some ideas though were really far from what we initially talked about so we had to move away from that. With knowing what your personal brand is, you can ditch those irrelevant ideas and concentrate on the things that WILL MATTER for your brand.

The next importance of personal branding is that you establish your presence in that space that you want to be know in. Without a good brand for yourself as a freelancer or solopreneur, you will just be one of the other players in that field. Obviously, if you stand out and are different from the rest, there will be that certain group of clients who will particularly want your service. This means that you can earn more.

I still have a lot to say about Personal Branding so I invite you to join me at the Personal Branding Workshop for Freelancers and Solopreneurs on April 18, 25 and May 2.

Is it possible for a WAHM to get rich?

Are we talking about rich in love and happiness? haha! If that’s it then, raise the roof! AMEN!  We Work-at-Home-Moms (WAHMs) are rich in love and happiness. But for this particular post, I’ll be talking about financial wealth. We can all get rich, WAHMS!

I have been a work at home mom / entrepreneur since October 2012 and those who have been reading my blog would know about this journey. And I think a lot of you would see that every weekend (and weekdays, though just from my home), I work my ass off to have great and successful workshops — workshops that are painstakingly prepared by my awesome team, backed up by great sponsors and attended by beautiful people who prioritize learning.

Success didn’t come easy and until now, it’s just creeping in slowly, but I am proud that I know that I will have enough for Zeeka’s college tuition fee already. I am proud to say that even if we just live a simple life, we have enough to make us happy. We have enough to not to worry about the future. Of course, there are still things that we are saving up for and things that we still wish we could have, but we know that we are slowly getting there.

My husband is employed while I work on our business. We are simple folks with simple dreams. A lot of the couples that I meet are quite like us in many ways — very practical. We don’t splurge on things. A lot of the financial advice that I got early on was really by listening to my good friend, Fitz Villafuerte. I used to sit in a lot during his Ready to Be rich workshops with Manila Workshops and I really learned a lot.

I highly suggest that you attend his workshop on April 18 which is entitled Get Rich, WAHM: Work at Home and Achieve Wealth. This will be from 10AM to 4PM at O2 Space – Unit 330 Milelong Building, Amorsolo St., Bgy. Pio del Pilar, Makati City.

GetRichWAHM3-610x1024

Fitz Gerard Villafuerte, RFP is a civil engineer who decided to quit the corporate world in 2003 to pursue entrepreneurship. In 2014, he became a registered financial planner.

His blog, entitled, Ready To Be Rich, has already received several recognitions including the Best Business and Finance Blog at the Philippine Blog Awards for two years in a row. Moreover, an international finance publication, Wise Bread, has likewise ranked his website as among the Top 100 Personal Finance blogs in the world. Fitz has also been recognized by Moneysense Magazine as among the top 12 most influential people in Personal Finance in the Philippines.

Learning Fee is at:
Regular rate: Php 2500
Early bird rate: Php 1800 (until April 8,2015)
Group rate: Php 4500 for a group of three

Participants will get a 2-months premium Raket account from raket.ph! 🙂

New Pampers Baby Dry Launch Event

We have gotten to an era where sleep has become a precious commodity. One of my goals in my list is to sleep at least 8 hours a day. People from ages ago would have laughed at this. Imagine having enough sleep as a goal? This explains why people are more stressed and unhealthy. For babies, there are studies (Spruyt et al, 2008; Scher et al, 1992) that show that for babies who sleep better, they are happier and appear more positive about interacting and concentrating. They are more alert, playful and friendly. We know that sleep is important for a baby’s social and cognitive development, therefore we need to make baby’s sleep as sound and relaxing as possible.

I remember when my daughter was a baby, we used to play relaxing classical music all the time. I consider myself fortunate as she was the type of baby who got to sleep longer hours early on. I remember that when she was 6 months old, she would already get to sleep 8 hours straight and we would breastfeed before sleeping and the minute she would get up. I was really lucky!

The thing that wakes baby up oftentimes is if they are hungry or if they feel uncomfortable with their nappies. For my daughter’s diapers, we are currently using Pampers. We used to use another brand but we noticed that oftentimes, my daughter would get irritable and we realized that it was because her diaper was always full. When we changed to Pampers, we would not change her diapers as often anymore. We really noticed the difference. I actually now understand why Pampers is the World’s #1 diaper brand.

Love at First Sight

When I was invited to be one of the digital ambassadors of Pampers for this year, I did not hesitate. I immediately said YES, because I’m a believer. They invited us to a launch of a new product called the Pampers Baby Dry.

Decorations at Pampers Event

When I got there, the place was beautifully decorated. It was like attending my own baby shower again. I’m sure a lot of the mom attendees felt the same way. Imagine the surprise as we saw a picture of our own child in one of the tables! This is the picture of my daughter (proud mama!). These were souvenirs given to us by Pampers. Great job Oomph Styling and Fuentes Manila for creating such a magical ambiance.

When the program started, it was hosted by first time mom, Gelli Victor. She introduced the new ambassador for Pampers, which was the very lovely Andi Manzano – Reyes. Andi talked about her excitement as a first time mom and to give her support and all the expecting moms in the event, Pampers invited Dra. Concepcion Alfonso, a Pediatrician.

Unveiling of Pampers Baby Dry

What I love about the all-New Pampers Baby Dry is that it delivers up to 12 hours of skin dryness. Imagine not having to change your baby’s diaper for 12 hours! Love it! Your baby will get to sleep soundly and you don’t have to worry about checking her nappy every hour. This feature was actually demoed during the event. They asked us to pour water over Pampers Baby Dry and another brand of diaper, then asked us to use a paper towel to check which absorbs faster and stronger.

Comparison

As you can see, the other brand didn’t absorb the wetness. There was a wet area in the paper towel after we placed it on top of the diaper. Pampers Baby Dry still has that Magic Gel that locks in wetness better than other diapers.

Comparison 2

Also, New Pampers Baby Dry now also has STRETCHY TAPES that adapt to the baby’s shape and movements, which makes it more comfortable to wear.  See how long the tapes could stretch!

Stretchy

For those who are interested to buy the product, here is a guide depending on the weight of the baby.

NEW Pampers Sizing / Currently Wearing / Estimated Weight
1 / NB / Up to 5kg
2 / S / 3-8kg
3 / M / 6-11kg
4 / L / 9-14kg
5 / XL / 12-16kg
6 / XXL / 14+ kg

Mompreneur Jennelyn Faiwas of Chubby Toes Ceramic Impressions

When Zeeka was 17 months old, I had a ceramic impression of her little hands and feet made by this very talented lady. You can check out my review here: http://mommyginger.com/2014/10/chubby-toes-ceramic-impressions.html Today, I’m happy to share with you the mompreneur story of the Jennelyn Faiwas, the owner of Chubby Toes Ceramic Impressions.

with Julian 2

Mompreneur Jen with Julian

Who is Jen?

I am a licensed financial advisor, a breastfeeding peer counselor and a full time mompreneur. My strong advocacy is for breastfeeding. I believe that it is every mothers’ and babies’ right to breastfeed. Mothers should be given all the information about it and the dangers of artificial feeding. While the system protects , promotes and supports this right. I also love to babywear, cloth diaper and co-sleep with my son.

My son is 2 years old. I’m a single mom. And that is why my world revolves around my son. Before I got pregnant, I’m contented with my life as an employee in an IT company. But things really will change when you have other priorities.
Well, my dream is to be a bearer of financial independence to more people, to be a gentle birth doula, a very successful entrepreneur and a good homeschooler. A tall order eh? 🙂

My interview with Mompreneur Jennelyn Faiwas of Chubby Toes Ceramic Impressions:

Ginger: Hi Jen! Can you tell us more about your business?

Jen: Chubby Toes Ceramic Impressions specializes in creating a unique keepsakes of our loved ones, especially the very cute babies. Newborn babies are my specialty. Because they just grow so fast. They start to be this teeny weeny creatures with tiny hands and feet then it feels like in an instant they will become this running, talking small people.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

So Chubby Toes captures this moment on clay and transform it to ceramics. I do children of any age as well, since they will just grow and grow but we can still capture their little hands and feet sizes now. I also do any member of the family, including pets! I started last year and it started growing. I have an FB account dedicated solely for my business. Recently, I also set-up a website that showcases my work since I started in 2014.

Ginger: Interesting and such a unique idea. Who do you plan to tap?
Jen: The primary market for my business is families with children or pets. Now, I have a vision of expanding my business as notable and special keepsakes. I am experimenting on my impressions so they can be used on occasions like weddings, debuts, birthdays, wedding, baptism etc.

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Ginger: How did you come up with this idea and what made you decide to start this kind of business?
Jen: Since giving birth to my son, I was always looking for ways to capture milestones and memories of his “littleness”. I have a monthly photo of him. I (tried to) journal his every milestone. So this included getting his hand and foot prints regularly. I have used ink and those DIY salt dough and plaster of paris. I used to be so crazy about it.

Anyway, I used to always encounter this ceramic impressions thing during my search for ways to capture (and display) my son’s keepsakes. I know that it’s not available here in the Philippines, but I so wanted it! I salivate just looking at all those beautiful ceramic plates, but all out of reach for me. So after months of constantly coming across it, I just thought why not start it here? How awesome would that be!
So I started to ask around and research about it some more. Then I met my mentor/trainer and things started rolling. I purchased a complete set of training materials, ordered my kiln. And so Chubby Toes is born.

I started practicing with my son’s impressions, then I asked friends and neighbors if I can borrow their babies and have their impression taken. Most of the time people can’t really understand what I want to do, or what my product is. But when they see the finished product in person, they are ecstatic that I have made this special keepsake for them. So I’m happy. 🙂

Ginger: Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a Mompreneur? What are these?

Jen: Yes, I used to be an employee with a decent enough income. When I took the leap, I have to adjust to the fact that it won’t be the same as when I hold a regular job, at least financially. Also I have to get out of my comfort zone. It entails meeting more people, marketing my product, etc. My usual routine before was to work then go home, that’s it. But now I have to constantly socialize and be out there, which really is a new experience and enlightening for me 🙂

Ginger: What are three traits that you think a Mompreneur should have when starting their own business?

Jen: It has been said before, but you really need to find a business that you are passionate about. We can all start a business, but sustaining it is another thing. And I think that’s what our passion does, it fuels us to continue and breeze through whatever we may encounter along the way. I sincerely believe that, love what you’re doing and success will follow.

I think another thing that made many Mompreneurs successful, is their motivation to always be there for their families. Being at home is a constant reminder of that.

Ginger: Any unforgettable moments or lessons that you learned as a Mompreneur?

Jen: Things won’t always go as smoothly as we plan. I have my day clearly planned, but no, my son won’t allow me to do my things. He needs to feed, he needs me to change his diaper, I’m the one he needs to read him the book he wants. It’s crazy really. But I think it’s part of all the fun and challenges as a Mompreneur. And I love every bit of it! 🙂

I clearly remember my first customer, she contacted me through my facebook page. With full faith she asked to have her son’s impressions taken. Ok, with what I do, sometimes clients can’t really appreciate my beautiful product, at least on that first meeting because they will only see the plain-looking gray clay I use for taking their baby’s impressions.
So with this customer, I handed her her son’s impression plate after it was completed. And she was so happy and said “Maganda nga pala talaga!”. And so it made me happy too, to have had a chance to preserve a special keepsake for them that they can forever cherish. 🙂

Ginger: What advice can you give to other Mompreneurs?

Jen: Find that something that will light your inner fire. It is sometimes easy to jump on the bandwagon but always ask yourself if this is really what you want to do. You have to have a clear vision of why you do what you do. And if the going gets tough, you will only have that fire to hold on to.

Ginger: Thank you Jen for such inspiring words. For those who want to contact Jen, the information of her company is seen below. Thank you again for reading this inspiring mompreneur story!

Who Wants to Attend the What to Know Before Giving Birth Talk? (Giveaway)

First time mommies and daddies! I’m so excited to share with you this post for today. Last March 16, I announced some of the upcoming parenting workshops from Manila Workshops and Best for Families. You can read about these parenting workshops in this link: Upcoming Parenting Workshops in Manila

In the past few runs that we have, I have come across expectant couples who are really adamant in learning more about parenting and about safely giving birth and raising a child. As there is really no certification on being a great parent, I admire these couples who really go out of their way to learn. I truly believe, just like in business or even in professional careers, people who have that insatiable thirst for knowledge and people who are not close minded are the ones who succeed.

For parents who constantly strive to be better parents and who constantly strive to know more by reading books, surfing the web, attending workshops, talking to other parents, etc., CHEERS! This giveaway is for you!

Happy Heart Kids Yoga Summer Camp

I think that I need not be worried. My daughter seems to love yoga and she seems to be enjoying it. Everytime she watches me practice in the morning, she goes into her own version of her downward dog (much like just bending over and touching the floor). I love that she’s so enthusiastic about it at such an early age. I have always believed that yoga is beneficial and I’m happy that it will be a part of my daughter’s life early on.

My daughter appreciates yoga!

My daughter appreciates yoga!

It’s so nice to see that there are a lot of kids yoga classes being offered already. In my teacher training classes with Onelife, I was fortunate enough to be batchmates with one super-duper passionate kids / prenatal yoga teacher and doctor (by profession), Dr. Raissa Paje. She is the Program Director and Faculty Head of Happy Heart Kids Yoga. Happy Heart Kids Yoga aims to promote health and wellness in children. Their mission is to share yoga with the children, both the typical kids and those with special needs, and make it an enjoyable way for them to imbibe a healthy lifestyle through movement and mindfulness, so that young as they are, they can become happy, healthy and productive in every aspect of their lives.

Me and Dr. Raissa Paje
