Yummy Milkshake for Kids: Beary Berry Shake using California Milk

We are in the process of looking for a good “big school” for our daughter. In a recent conversation with a co-parent, she mentioned that some schools also interview parents. I asked her what they ask parents, and she said, the usual questions like “how much time do you spend with your child?” and “What do you do when you spend time with her?”. That got me thinking about how we spend time with our daughter.

I realized that I haven’t been that much “fun” to hang around with. Haha! When we hang around, it’s always about teaching her about numbers and the alphabet. So with this, I though about a fun activity that we can do together. One of the things that I thought of is making a fun and nutritious drink together.

I just bought three boxes of California Sunshine Milk from S&R Membership Club, so I thought about creating milkshake with her. My daughter loves the California Sunshine Milk Homogenized (orange box). The other two variants that we bought were California Sunshine Milk Non-Fat (blue Box) and California Sunshine Milk Reduced Fat (purple box) which my husband and I drink, too!

We love buying California Sunshine Milk because it has the seal of approval from the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB). The CMAB, an instrumentality of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is one of the leading agricultural marketing boards in the US comprised of the dairy farm families in the state. CMAB exists to spread the word about the extraordinary dairy products made with Real California Milk.

With this sign, I know that the milk that we give our daughter is of the highest quality.

We want to share with you this fun recipe we created!

Berry Beary Milkshake

Ingredients:

3 Ounces of California Sunshine Milk Homogenized (orange box)
1 Cup Yogurt
1 Tablespoon Sugar
15 pieces graham bears

How to create the Berry Beary Milkshake!

  4. Add 15 pieces of graham bears, 4 huge pieces of marshmallow and 5 small bars of wafer covered with chocolate.

We had so much fun. My daughter loved the drink and she asked for more refills. This is a fun activity that you and your child can do.

How about you? How do you spend time with your kids? Do you invent recipes, too? Have you invented one recently? Can you share your California Milk Recipe with us and use #ReturntoReal #LookForTheSeal? I’d love to feature your recipe in my blog, too!

Have an enjoyable day with your loved ones!

Mommy Diaries: Back to School Shopping at NBS was FUN!

Back-to-school shopping was fun! I’m sure you have read my first article on my back to school shopping spree at NBS with some of the Mommas of Manila (haha!). If you haven’t read it yet, read about it here: http://mommyginger.com/2017/05/back-school-shopping-spree-national-book-store.html Now, I wanted to share with you this video that my friend Mikaela and I created on what our tips for moms are.

The back-to-school season is so stressful for a lot of moms, so here are a few tips that we wanted to share with you.
1) Make a list  of what you need. Mikaela makes her own list so she doesn’t forget anything. If you have it on paper, you will remember to buy these things.
2) Plan and have something visual to look back at. I have a whiteboard and cork board at home for stuff that I need to check every so often. I have a huge cork board for my goals, to do lists, bills, tuition fee schedule that I just pin. Then I have a a white board which I use when teaching Zeeka and for both our schedules! Both these things can be found, of course, at National Book Store.
3) Organize your home, so you’re READY! Arrange your home so that you have designated areas for different stuff. Also, I have specific areas for where things are. I have paper inside filing cabinets, colored paper in a big box, markers inside a bag, etc. I usually stock up also on different things. It’s good to be prepared for anything!
4) Label all of your things! As I said in the video, I’m a sucker for labeling everything. All of the things that I shared with you in my unboxing video of what I bought in NBS were all labeled!
5) Prepare a Go-Bag for your child. There are earthquakes happening here and around the world, so it won’t hurt to be ready for anything. I usually prepare a Go-Bag for Zeeka, my daughter. This includes a first aid kit, extra clothes, flashlight, whistle, protein bar or crackers, alcohol, bottled water. In National Book Store, you can find these stuff (except the drinks and food)!
How about you? What are your back to school tips! Leave a comment below, so that we can all help each other! You can also share your tips using #BacktoSchoolwithNBS
Happy Shopping!

Mommy Research: Make Sure that Your Kids Get the Right Care (RiteMED for Kids)

As a parent of an active and bubbly child, keeping her healthy and safe is my utmost priority. I make sure that she eats on time and consumes healthy food. But as a toddler, sometimes, she just likes to play, follows me a bit when I tell her to eat and ultimately just “gets it over with”. Event if I get too over-protective when it comes to her daily eating habits, I know that I need to supplement it with vitamins to give her enough of the daily requirements needed. What I use now is RiteMED for kids.

As kids, they don’t understand the reason why they need to take vitamins, but Zeeka loves drinking Vitamins. She thinks it gives her superpowers! With this, I don’t have a hard time giving her RiteMED Multivitamins + CGF Syrup: Food Supplement. But I also tell her that she has to take it to fight fever (natural immune booster) and to prevent diseases and illnesses.

My very bubbly and energetic little RiteMED kid!

Research shows that ideally, children should get their vitamins and nutrients from a well-balanced and healthy diet that includes dairy, vibrant and fresh fruits and vegetables, protein like chicken, fish, meat and eggs and most importantly, good carbohydrates like whole grains, steel-cut oats and brown rice.

According to the National Nutrition Council (NNC), approximately four million Filipino children are suffering from malnutrition due to lack of healthy food to eat and enough vitamins and nutrients in a daily basis. As the figure balloons daily, this continues to be a serious child health problem, with the Philippines being highly disaster-prone. As the malnutrition increases in the aftermath of emergencies, added the NNC.

So how do we address this problem? Simple. It should always start at home. Sometimes, healthy children get their best start from what you put and buy in your grocery cart. Currently, there are 13 vitamins and 14 essential minerals that a child needs in order to grow healthily and properly. These are:

● Vitamin A helps promote normal growth and development, healthy skin, eyes, and immune system.

● Vitamin Bs – (B2, B3, B6, and B12) It aids metabolism, energy, and healthy circulatory and nervous systems.

● Vitamin C helps promote healthy muscles, connective tissue, and skin.

● Vitamin D helps bone and tooth formation and helps the body absorb calcium. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight.

● Calcium helps build strong bones and teeth.

● Iron builds muscle and is essential to healthy red blood cells.

Studies show that Megavitamins (large doses of vitamins) are not a good idea for children. It normally contains vitamins A, D, E and K, also known as the fat-soluble vitamins, can be toxic if
kids overdose on excessive amounts, same as with Iron.

But the risk of dietary deficiency is tremendously greater than the risk of overdosing on a multivitamin. Mostly, children’s daily dies are missing essential nutrients and taking one multivitamins daily has the potential to aid a nutrient diet.

How to get the Right Vitamin Supplement for Kids:

● Always check the label first – Make it a habit to always check and read the label carefully so you would know which nutrients are included and the amounts contained each serving. This is also to avoid consuming vitamins that will expire soon. I always trust RiteMED. I’ve shifted to this brand since February and I have been happy with using RiteMED Multivitamins + Chlorella Growth Factor Syrup.

● Percentage checking – Choose a supplement that provides 100% of the Daily Value (DV) because some nutrients like magnesium or calcium are not included, because if pharmaceutical companies include these, the pill/tablet will be too large to swallow.

● Get the essential vitamins and minerals – Most multivitamin preparations usually include the following vitamins and minerals: vitamin C, B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6, folic acid (B9), B12, B5 (pantothenic acid), biotin, A, E, D2 or D3 (cholecalciferol), K, potassium, iodine, selenium, borate, zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, betacarotene, and iron. You can check out RiteMED Ascorbic Acid 100 MG Syrup and RiteMED Zinc-C Ascorbic + Zinc Syrup Food Supplement

These are from my personal experiences as a mom. Of course, don’t forget to consult with your child’s doctor, too 🙂 Do you have other tips on how to keep your child healthy and safe? Share it with me!

Have a happy week!

All the Help that you Can Get (S&R Mother’s Day Edition)

There is a constant clamor for content that push women to believe that they can be anything and everything that they want to be. They are capable of taking on multiple roles — being a wife or mother and at the same time, someone who contributes a great deal in the home and in society. Because of this, women have continuously built self-confidence and boosted the spirits of other ladies in their circle. Most of them have taken upon themselves tasks and responsibilities that people deemed impossible to do. It’s truly a whole new world.

My fair lady! 🙂 Seeing confidence in little ladies, too!

As a woman and mother, there are times, too, that I break down. In a moment when I fail living up to the expectations of others, I shatter. Even if I know that other people’s expectations shouldn’t matter, I myself am confronted by my own self-judgements. What we should all look into is loving ourselves and forgiving ourselves. We are all super women, but we can’t feel super all the time. And that’s just how life works.

It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to tell your spouse that you really can’t handle the pressure. It’s okay to call your mom to temporarily ask her to look after the kids. It’s okay to ask help from your nanny. It’s okay to let yourself loose sometimes in order not to lose yourself.

Making things efficient and quick at home, too, can be another strategy that you can do. I found some stuff at S&R Membership Club that can help you get things done quickly and with the utmost quality that your family deserves!

Bread Toaster from Imarflex — it can toast up to 4 slices at a time! (Only at Php 2100 from Php 2300+)

DeliChef Bread Maker — because your family deserves the best! (Only Php 4500 from Php 6000)

Be inspired to cook with the futuristic design of this Simple Touch Digital Air Cooker at Php 7995.

Tyler Digital Ecosmart Carousel Fan only at Pp 4500 from Php 9000! Big Savings!

Jars with “chalkboards” for easy labeling, so you don’t have to scramble for stuff!

Denmark Non-Stick Steel Paella Pan, so you can cook for your entire family!

Thomson Crusty Chef Pizza Maker, so you can make your own pizza!

You need all the help you can get, ladies — be it from tools and equipment like these or from people who truly love us. I hope you had an enjoyable Mother’s day! I actually had a spectacular S&R Mother’s Day! Seriously, I went shopping on that day. This was the time when I had all of these reflections.

So, talk to you soon!

Lots of love,

Mommy Ginger

Back To School Tips and my Personal Mommy Hacks (and our shopping video at SM Stationery!!)

I usually start preparing everything that my child needs for school during the month of May, early May to be exact. There are a lot of benefits to being ready early. One benefit is that you avoid the rush that happens, and you can get to choose from the various items that are available. My 4 year old daughter is one who loves choosing stuff by herself, and having a toddler amidst a huge crowd will be dangerous and chaotic. But I’m not here to share with you the usual tips that I assume you already know about. I’m here to share with you the personal strategies that I have; I’ll share with you some mommy hacks that I personally do — my very own back to school tips.

1. Have lots of labels with the name of your child and your name on them (as guardian) with an emergency contact number. We normally just have the name of our daughter / son printed with the grade level, but I think there is a need to place the parents name and the contact details as emergency contact. Place this on all personal belongings of the child.

2. Have a drawer/s with all of the “possible” school supplies that your child might need. If there is one thing that being in events has taught me, it was being ready for anything with everything. I have stock of folders (different sizes, a few color), art materials, all kinds of paper (from short/ling bond, construction, board, etc. and in different colours, too), glue gun, glue sticks, ordinary glue, scissors in all sizes, punchers, staplers, all kinds of colouring pens, permanent and whiteboard markers, oil pastels, crayons, index cards, illustration boards, etc. I practically have everything in the SM Stationery Department of SM. I truly have it all, too!

3. As parents, school means just thinking about your child’s “school”. In my case, I also look for after school activities where I can enrol her. As early as May, I already think of extra-after school fun activities that she can do. She has math lessons after school and I’m already waiting for the schedule of the art school where I inquired with a month ago. With this, I can fill her days already with activities, so she makes full use of her time enjoying learning. My daughter loves going out, so the activities that we prepare for her to do at home, isn’t enough 🙁 So for this mommy hack or back to school tip, it really depends on what you think your child needs. If you want them to do a few activities at home after school, for toddlers, there are sticker book activities, fun workbooks that are available at SM Stationery (got mine in SM Stationery Bacolod).

4. Get a head start on creating the meal plan and the activity schedule for your child before school starts. I always want to have it all ready to be seen by everyone in the household one month in advance, so that I will always have a guide one or two months before. With the meal guide, I will know what ingredients or food to buy from the grocery. With the activity guide, it will tell everyone in the house what my daughter is up to every single moment.

5. In choosing school materials and even in choosing activities, I always involve my child. I have noticed that she is more engaged when she is part of the decision making process. Check out our fun trip to SM Stationery in Megamall. Do you know that they have ready-made back to school packs for each level. Check this out! It’s only at Php 399 each.

So these are my own personal hacks and tips. I hope that this article was useful in anyway to you. Oh, btw, if you want a copy of the cute labels that I have mentioned above, please leave me a message in the comment section below so that I can email a copy of it to you! The printables are lovingly made by LD Design and Creative Pursuits.

You can then have them printed at Alfox Printing.

Life is About Balance: Encouraging Study-Life Balance

We all strive for balance in anything that we do, because we all know that life is about balance and moderation. Even as a parent, we all want to look for that balance. I am very conscious about how I deal with my child as a parent. I don’t want to feel like i’m not being enough of a parent to my daughter, but I don’t want to hover over every move, too (just like what Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford shares in this video). But as a parent, finding that balance and guiding our children to find that balance is hard!

This summer I enrolled my daughter at her own school (since they were offering summer classes), McDonald’s Kiddie Crew, gymnastics and math classes. Believe me, I wasn’t over parenting. I did this because she clamoured for it. She kept asking me for activities to do. We told her that we’ll just do some stuff at home, and she said she wanted activities outside the house!

My little lady who’s off to school 🙂

With this, it got thinking about study-life balance. In this environment that we live in now, everything seems to be so cut throat. Competition here and there, and there doesn’t seem to be any room for relaxation. But relaxation and taking things easy is important. Living life AND enjoying it is something that we tend to forget. Since we forget that this should be the case, and that relaxation and enjoyment is actually crucial for self- awareness and self-development, we as parents tend to pass on the same expectations to our kids.

We make a list of what they should know and be doing at a certain age. We make unnecessary goals for them in our mind, and if they don’t meet those goals, we push them further or blame ourselves for not being the parent that we should be. I think what we need to help them with or help ourselves with is that we need to encourage study life balance. Our kids need to put enough effort into academics, but at the same time, we need to encourage them to have fun and relax at certain moments in their lives.

How do we encourage Study-Life Balance?

Keep things stress-free by having a time for relaxation.

Oftentimes, we keep track of the time that they spend for homework or studying. But, we don’t keep track of the time that they spend playing outdoors, time spent reading a book or just writing anything that they want, time spent going to the mall or watching a movie with family and friends. Let’s try to keep study time within “study time”. Let’s also monitor that our children get to see the sun and breathe fresh air.

See to it that your children get enough sleep.

We all know that sleep makes everything better. It helps the body return to that state of equilibrium. We need it and our kids need it, too!

Praise them not for achieving goals, but praise them for the Process or for “Being”

We’ve learned that we should praise our children not for getting high grades, but for trying or focusing or for the discipline that they show. We’ve learned to praise our daughter, too, not only for finishing her homework, but for discovering new things or being observant about things not related to studying or practicing her letters and numbers (she’s only 4, btw). We also praise her for day to day interactions like when she’s courteous to someone or when she exudes confidence, etc.

Travel to Learn; Discover things outside the Home or Classroom

Travel opens your children to new learnings. This is why I love Boardwalk, because this May, they have a Back to School Shop and Win Promo where participants can get a chance to win a trip to Hong Kong for four! The lucky winner of the Back to School Shop and Win Promo can take their family to see the breathtaking view of the city’s skyscrapers, glittering harbor and green hills at The Peak and have a taste of Hong Kong’s cuisine at the Temple Street Night Market. Boardwalk will take care of your flight and your 3-day/2-night accommodation for your family.

What I love about what Boardwalk is doing is that the winning family will have time to learn from this trip. They will see Hong Kong’s most popular tourist spots such as the historical Clock Tower, the popular Golden Bauhinia Square, and the Avenue of Stars where the most celebrated moments in Asia’s movie industry can be relived. They all can go shopping, too, and even admire one of the world’s most spectacular skylines while taking a stroll along the waterfront at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade.

What i’ve noticed with my daughter, too, is that she doesn’t forget trips like these. She clearly remembers our Universal Studios Singapore experience! So for the winning family, I’m sure your children won’t forget this trip since all 4 members of the family will be given an all-day access ticket to Hong Kong Disneyland!

It’s nice to prepare and be in Back to school mode, but it’s even nice to cap summer off with this wonderful trip. Check out the details and mechanics on how you can make your 2017 summer an unforgettable one at www.boardwalkshop.ph.

*A single-receipt online purchase of Back to School items worth P1,000 qualifies as one raffle entry. Promo is valid from April 17 to July 17, 2017.

Again, encourage study-life balance and let your child discover the world, enjoy and live it. Life is about balance! Even with that checklist of goals in our mind that we think they need to accomplish, it’s better that we let them create their own goals and dreams and just lead them down the path where they will discover these themselves.

On Bonding and Special Announcement on S&R Members Treat

My little one and I are in Singapore today. Apart from “working” in the morning yesterday, we had around 2 hours free time to go around the mall. I love spending time with Zeeka. Her wit amazes me. She doesn’t talk much most of the time, but when she talks, it surprises me that she can already comprehend a lot of things. Sometimes, I am amazed, too, at how huge her view of the world is already. The simple things that we don’t see, she notices.

zeeka-and-mommy-ginger

My husband and I have been feeling guilty these past couple of months, since we have been busy with our business. We haven’t spent as much time as we want with her. So this month, starting with this trip, we have decided to bring her to most of our work engagements out of town or out of the country.

I am thankful though, that we have little, simple moments that we share together with each other. We have blocked off moments where we all need to be present. One example is our monthly grocery shopping at S&R. We have been consistent in making this our “bonding” moment.

Here are some videos from our store visits from the past:

Speaking of S&R Membership Club, here is great news for the members! S&R Members will get five whole days of big value and even bigger savings, with Buy 1 Take 1 deals and price reductions of up to 50% off on lots and lots of S&R picks – from grocery staples like fresh produce, yummy baked goodies, and imported treats, to various gift items, housewares, towels and linens, and even select appliances.

members-treat-flyer

S&R currently has 12 branches: BGC (Taguig City), Aseana (Pasay City), Congressional (Quezon City), Alabang (Muntinlupa City), Shaw (Mandaluyong City), Cebu, Pampanga, Imus (Cavite), Nuvali (Laguna), Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, and Davao.

Aside from low prices matched with a world-class shopping experience, another awesome perk for S&R members is POWER FUEL SAVERS, a partnership with Unioil, the pioneer of high-quality clean fuels in the country. Only on the dates of the S&R Members’ Treat from March 29, 2017 until April 02, 2017, fuel savings will get even bigger at Php 4.00 off per liter of gasoline or Php 3.00 off per liter of diesel at any of the 50 participating Unioil branches.

So will you make your S&R grocery shopping day your “bonding” day, too? 🙂 See you on March 29 then!
