My First Time Parents Guide (Collated Favorite Blog Posts)

Thank you so much to all those who attended the First Time Parents Workshop Series Second Run which was brought to you by Manila Workshops and the Parenting Emporium. It was truly a success and there were a lot of expecting moms and dads who attended. Thank you so much and we hope that those who couldn’t make it will be able to attend the next classes this July (http://manilaworkshops.com/events/first-time-parents-workshop-series-2016-thirdrun).  Our goal is really to help you prepare for your birth. With this, I have collated my personal favorite readings (my First Time Parents Guide) when it comes to preparing for Mommyhood (or Daddyhood!).

OB Check-ups and Pregnancy Nutrition

As first time parents, we don’t know what to expect when we go to our OB-GYN. I remember during my pre-natal visits, my husband would come with me and he had more questions! haha!

All About Breastfeeding

I exclusively breastfed my daughter for 1 year + and I think it really did her good. She hardly gets sick and she’s always so alive, awake and enthusiastic!

First Time Expectant Parents vs Second Time Expectant Parents vs Third Time…

We’re thinking of having another baby next year and I think it will be as challenging as how it was with our first child. I’m sure a lot of second time expectant parents know what I’m talking about. Based on talks with friends, not a single one of them said that it gets easier the second time around. Sure, you would already know the basics, like how to change a diaper, how and when to give them solid food, or that breastmilk is still the best for any baby, but it will still be challenging. Why? It will be challenging because each child is different.

You’re not just buying the same doll off from a store’s shelf! Haha! The challenge is really adjusting once again to that particular child. Little Ginger

I do love having someone to look after (aside from looking after my husband). I love being a mom, even if it may seem to many that I highlight my businesses more over my family in conversations. Even if I don’t talk about my family as much as I babble about business and my new ventures, I love the spontaneous, silly conversations that I have with my 3 year old daughter at times when I’m home. I love wandering through the streets in our community when we both need breaks from working (for me) and from eating and playing (for her). I love the hugs and the kisses and the surprise “i love you, mama!” that she gives all throughout the day.

If you are expecting a child, there is nothing more challenging (even more challenging than running a business!), fulfilling, precious, exciting, etc. (there are tons of adjectives really) as raising your own child.

Is my Life Going to Change now that I’m a Parent? (First Time Parents Workshop Series!)

I had a conversation with a friend recently and she was asking me what my happiest moment was. I did not hesitate and immediately said it was the day I gave birth to my daughter. That was the day my life changed completely — totally — drastically! Haha! As a first time parent, I now know the importance of sleep. I now know how it feels to be completely responsible for another person’s well being and safety. I now know how much love you can actually give and I mean real love — the love that is defined by sacrifice and putting another person’s needs first before yours.

First time Parents

Being a first time parent means a lot of joyous and super fun days, but also a lot of days of frustration and worry. It means having to go through the highest of highs of moments like hearing your baby’s first words to the lowest of lows, like when postpartum depression hits and times when you feel ugly as hell.

But what I want you to know is that all of these are normal and first time parents undergo these things. Your lives will definitely change, but there is nothing compared to the feeling that you get when you see your child for the first time.

Manila Workshops and The Parenting Emporium want to help you prepare for your lives as First Time Parents by sharing with you a series of workshops that you can attend. The first workshop will be on January 30, 2016.

Workshop-Series-2016-1-724x1024

Check out the details on the registration page in this link: http://manilaworkshops.com/events/ftp2016-janfeb

If you need emotional and technical guidance, I know that you will get it through the support the of the community that you will come across with when you attend these workshops! I hope to meet you in one of these workshops! 🙂

Who Wants to Attend the What to Know Before Giving Birth Talk? (Giveaway)

First time mommies and daddies! I’m so excited to share with you this post for today. Last March 16, I announced some of the upcoming parenting workshops from Manila Workshops and Best for Families. You can read about these parenting workshops in this link: Upcoming Parenting Workshops in Manila

In the past few runs that we have, I have come across expectant couples who are really adamant in learning more about parenting and about safely giving birth and raising a child. As there is really no certification on being a great parent, I admire these couples who really go out of their way to learn. I truly believe, just like in business or even in professional careers, people who have that insatiable thirst for knowledge and people who are not close minded are the ones who succeed.

For parents who constantly strive to be better parents and who constantly strive to know more by reading books, surfing the web, attending workshops, talking to other parents, etc., CHEERS! This giveaway is for you!

First Time Parents: Delivery and New Born Care

Having Zeeka in my life made me a better person. I am more in touch with my emotions and I feel like I want to help other people in any way that I can. One of the ways that I think I could help other people is through blogging. In this blog and in Manila Reviews, I have shared various experiences that would help other expecting parents and new mommies and daddies go through these experiences smoothly. I, of course, want them to enjoy every minute of having a baby that is why I share my experiences with them so that I can share what I have learned and what I have found out going through all of these experiences.

Another way that I could think of is through the brand and the work that I have started. Through Manila Workshops, I think I can create mini sessions where expecting parents can learn from experts, like doctors, certified nutritionist, consultants. etc. This is why I created the First Time Parents Workshop Series together with Medela Moms, Inc. and The Learning Basket.

We recently ran the First Time Parents: What to Know Before Giving Birth. You can read my post here:
http://mommyginger.com/2013/06/first-time-parents-workshop-series-what-to-know-before-giving-birth.html

I am personally inviting you to the second part of this four part workshop series. It’s entitled Delivery and New Born Care. In this workshop, I hope that a lot of the expecting parents learn from it. The topics to be discussed will be:
– Baby Milestones
– Newborn Baby Care
– All About Breastfeeding
– Safe Sleep

Delivery and New Born Care Workshop

Delivery and New Born Care Workshop

I would love to know more about Baby Milestones. Now that Zeeka is 3 months old, I would love to know what to expect from her during the first months until she becomes a toddler. I am also excited to learn more about Newborn Baby Care and Safe Sleep. I would love to hear your questions on breastfeeding, too!

Please do sign up and I hope to see you there! 🙂

Love lots,

First Time Parents Workshop Series: What to Know Before Giving Birth

I am so happy with the turnout of the first ever First Time Parents workshop series entitled “What to Know Before Giving Birth”. This was an idea that I had when I was pregnant with Baby Zeeka. I wanted to create a workshop that would guide parents as they went through the whole experience of pregnancy, labor and delivery, taking care of a newborn, then eventually, taking care of a toddler. This idea was then made possible by a partnership between ManilaWorkshops.com, Medela Moms, Inc. and The Learning Basket.

Last June 1, 2013, the day started early for me. I had to feed Zeeka early in the morning so that she wouldn’t be fussy on the ride going to Medela House. For those who are wondering where Medela House is, it is at #29 1st Street, New Manila, Quezon City. We got there at exactly 8:00 am. We had enough time to set up for the event.

Our sponsors started arriving, too! 🙂 St. Patrick though already gave us the free socks to be included in the kit days before the event. These are really very cute socks.

This is the booth of Mama Chows of Raquel. They gave free yummy lactation cookies to our workshop participants. They also served our lunch for the event.

First Time Parents 1 0006

Indigo Baby and Mamaste Art were also there to showcase their products and services. It was great to finally have met Mimsy of Mamaste Art. I find her services so cool! My sister-in-law availed of her belly casting services when she was pregnant with Noah.

First Time Parents 1 0004

First Time Parents 1 0005

And of course, our Co-sponsor, StemCord Philippines, Inc. was also there to talk about Cord Blood Banking and explain their services to the attendees.

First Time Parents 1 0008

This is me, welcoming the guests to the First Time Parents Workshop. I had a wonderful time explaining to the attendees where the idea came from.
First Time Parents 1 0010

First Time Parents 1 0012

Our first speaker was Dr. Diana Liu Sarmiento. She is actually my OB and I really love her! She takes time to answer our questions all the time, which I thought made her a good speaker for the workshop. I was right!

Dra. Sarmiento is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She completed her internship and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UP-PGH and proceeded with her fellowship in Trophoblastic Diseases also at the same institution. She is a consultant at the Asian Hospital Medical Center. She is also a writer for the Women’s Health and Wellness section of Yahoo! South East Asia. I love that she has her own website where she entertains questions from readers. This section is called “Magtanong Kay Doc”. Her website is www.filipinamd.com.

During the workshop, she discussed the pre-natal check up and creating a birth plan. The attendees asked a lot of questions and they were all answered by doc.

First Time Parents 1 0014

First Time Parents 1 0018

The next speaker was also very impressive. She was Ms. Cecile Bayaga, who is a registered nutritionist-dietitian and a full-time faculty at the College of Home Economics, University of the Philippines-Diliman. She has been teaching Principles of Nutrition, Nutrition for the Lifecycle, and Medical Nutrition Therapy for the past 12 years. She has published scientific articles on glycemic index, essential fatty acids for brain development, and clinical nutrition. In 2005, the Nutritionists-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines awarded her as The Most Promising Nutritionist-Dietitian.

Miss Ces discussed Nutrition during Pregnancy. I learned a lot from her. She discussed the vitamins and nutrients that are essential for a pregnant lady. She also discussed exercises that you can do while pregnant.
First Time Parents 1 0022

Lunch was then send served by Mama Chows of Raquel. Mama Chows sells lactation cookies that are so addicting! I am about to finish one box already!
First Time Parents 1 0028

After lunch, Ms. Phoebe Tsai-Te, President and COO of StemCord Philippines, discussed Cord Blood Banking. I actually availed of their services when I gave birth to Zeeka. I was really happy with their fast and reliable service.

First Time Parents 1 0031

Mimsy of Mamaste Art then came up to share her belly casting services with the attendees. I love her work and I think that she is so creative! She can help pregnant women create belly casts that they can keep to remind them of their pregnancy. They can show these casts to their kids when they grow up. She also shared the products of Indigo Baby, since Denise couldn’t make it (congratulations on your baby, Denise!).

Belly cast

Polly Fong of Oh Happy Day Birth Photography couldn’t make it, but she shared a video with all those who attended. It was about Birth Photography. Here it is:

First Time Parents 1 0035

And last but not the least, we had Daisy Lauron of Peek-a-boo Yaya Training Services discuss the topic maintaining a good relationship with yaya. She also discussed the Kasambahay Law.

First Time Parents 1 0038

All in all, there were a lot of useful information that was taken from the workshop. I’m glad that the attendees liked that run of the First Time Parents Workshop Series. Sharing with you the blog post of one of the attendees! http://musingsanddoings.wordpress.com/2013/06/02/parental-and-baby-prep-what-to-know-before-giving-birth/ Thank you Musings and Doings for sharing this with us. 🙂

For those who want to sign up for the second workshop under the First Time Parents Series entitled Delivery and New Born Care, please sign up by visiting this link: http://manilaworkshops.com/2013/05/first-time-parents-new-born-care.html

I hope that you spread the word about this workshop, and I hope to see and meet you in one of these workshops!

Love lots,
