We, Moms, get those moments when we want to go somewhere relaxing with the family, but when we think of all the bags and things that we need to bring, and when we think of all the schedules that we have to fix, we just ditch the idea. My family and I haven’t been travelling a lot because when I think of all of these things, I get tired just thinking about them. Recently, however, I really wanted to go take a break (I think I mentioned why in a previous post) so I decided to check out nearby beaches and resorts. Of course, when we think of a place that’s near Manila, a place that comes to mind is Batangas.

Sabangan Beach

A lot of families have been to beaches and resorts in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas. We haven’t been there; this is the first time that we are actually going to a beach in that area. We went to Sabangan Beach Resort.

The drive from Manila was around 3.5 hours. It was a relaxing drive.  There were not a lot of directional signs leading to the place (so they might need to add more signs). The place was easy to find, though so you need not worry! For directions to the place, you can check it on this page: Directions to Sabangan

We left at 7am and we got there at around 10:30 AM. Check in was at 2:00 PM, so we just rested and went around the resort.

While waiting for the room, my toddler had fun playing in their mini play area.

At 2:00 PM, they led us to our rooms. We were led to an air-conditioned room with two double sized beds, a private toilet and bath with water heater, an outdoor patio set, a mini refrigerator, cable television and room safe. Sabangan Beach Resort also provided 4 towels, soap, tooth brushes and complimentary Agua Vida purified water. Each room can accommodate 4 people. The rooms also come with meals already. The room as around Php 10,680.

We were so tired that we slept that afternoon. We woke up around 4:30 pm. My daughter was so excited about swimming so we all rushed to the beach.

The sand was a bit coarse but it was okay. The water was amazing! We could see little fishies swimming below. We had a Go Pro camera to take family videos and when we reviewed some of the files, it showed schools of fish swimming near our feet!

In the evening, the place was so relaxing that I got to think about a lot of things about my life and strategies for my business. Read all about my thoughts here: Growing your Business and Priorities

I would definitely go back to Sabangan Beach Resort for another weekend of fun with the family and even for some Me Time. As a mom, it’s important to have these bonding moments with family and some time for yourself to rejuvenate and be inspired and motivated again!

One of the concerns that I have with my daughter is that when we give her the iPad to use primarily for learning, she doesn’t want to let go of it. She cries and goes into a tantrum whenever we try to take the gadget away from her. The problem that we have as a couple is that we know that technology is an important part of how we live today. It is said that 36% of Filipinos have about 10 gadgets per household*, thus making the use of gadgets a necessity for daily living (Survey conducted by Microsoft Philippines in 2011). But, honestly and personally, I don’t think it’s doing her good at this point in time.

I have always known, through workshops that I attended before, that playing is an integral part of teaching your child. It is through active sensory play when all their five senses are awakened to discover and learn the world around them. This has been proven by Johnson’s baby in a social experiment to see how children respond to gadget play versus real play.

But of course, if you are a busy mom, it’s so easy to get tempted to just give them a gadget so that you can go on and do your daily chores. I attended the Johnson’s #playforreal event recently and I am thankful that I was again reminded that there are a lot of instances where sensory play can be incorporated into our daily lives. Playing need not be so planned out. It need not always be timed or “scripted”. You can play with your child during bath times, during times when you need to change their diapers or even during potty training times.

“As a brand committed to the happy, healthy development of children, we at Johnson’s believe that every activity that a child does can mean so much more to him,” says Trina Tanlapco, Johnson’s Associate Marketing Director. “Active play is integral and essential in the holistic development of children to let them discover the world around them. As a brand, this is something we would like to keep reminding parents of. With the information and products we offer, parents can let their children turn playtime to a time of learning while they #playforreal. ”

During the event, I saw how Zeeka enjoyed active and sensory play. I saw her just dive into a pail of paint and just at creating a beautiful masterpiece with her hands (which we oftentimes see as just mess… haha!). I saw her play with water and I just let her be, even if she was soaking wet. Oftentimes, it is so hard for us parents to see all of these mess, but this is how our children will get to learn about the world around them. Monica Javier, a teacher who has worked with preschool children for more than ten years, says that active sensorial play help children prepare for bigger things ahead of them which is why it is encouraged to be integrated in early education. “More than fun and entertainment, play actually helps children to expand their knowledge about themselves, allows communication with others, develop new competencies that may prepare them for challenges of the bigger environment.”

Make playtime more fun for your kids. Don’t worry about the mess. Don’t worry about the noise that they will make. Make your kids #playforreal so that they grow up to be inquisitive, creative, talented, confident and responsible citizens! I made this article in a new place (definition of new place: one that I haven’t been to before), a beach resort in Batangas called Sabangan Beach Resort. I wanted to go some place with the family just so that we could have a nice vacation together. I often tell people in my talks that the reason why I became an entrepreneur is because I wanted to spend more time with my daughter. But the truth is, this balancing act between family and work is so tiring. And now, I’m also thinking about expanding. Thinking about growing your business can be tiring, too. Being in this quiet and cozy place made me think about a lot of things. I’m feeling a bit sentimental and emotional right now.

I read an article which Martine shared recently from Cup of Jo about Slow Parenting. The tip that struck me the most was to watch our child. I may have always be there with Zeeka, but have I really ‘watched’ her. Was I really present during those times or was my mind wandering off to mind maps and business decisions I had to make? Tonight, Zeeka was jumping on the bed and it was 11 pm. She didn’t want to sleep. You know what made her sleep finally? She grabbed my fingers and played with them, then later on, she fell asleep holding my hand. That moment was something that both pained me and made me happy. It pained me because I realized that I miss out embracing small things like these. I know that I was always physically there but I wasn’t fully THERE. It made me happy because I know that I can still do something about it.

I went to this place to think also on strategies on how to grow my business. All the noise in Manila can be distracting and sometimes you need to get away and be with just your thoughts. At first, I was at a lost on what to do with my several businesses. To tell you frankly, not all of them are doing superbly as of the moment. This is something that you must understand. Not everything that you planned out for or you wished for will be what you will get. I am happy though because the businesses have remained strong. I just know that certain changes need to be made and we need to adapt. Those who don’t adapt, will not survive.

Growing your business Quote

Okay, going back, I felt lost as to where to start with strategizing. Then I thought about the realization that I had. I realized that I have just been grazing over different aspects in my life from my personal life to my businesses. Sometimes, because of all the things that I need to do, I just go through the daily grind by just ‘going through it’ and not really embracing each minute.

Alas! This is where I should find inspiration again. I need to feel deeply, to act passionately and live in the moment. This is something that I should do more and by doing this more, I will know what to do with my business. I need to enjoy life more (Gaaawd, I’m such a boring person! haha!).

So this is how it feels like to be at the crossroads of growing your business. It feels like you just started and created something new! Well, I’m not one to give up, but it’s time to enjoy the ride! Who’s with me?
