Hanns Insect Trap

A cool thing about having your own office is that fact that you can experiment on your own choice of equipments and tools. In the office, we have noticed that there are a lot of little flies that bother us. These aren’t mosquitoes though. These are the little flies that are either moth flies, fruit flies or drain flies. Drain Flies, obviously, breed in drains, sewers and septic tanks. Fruit flies are those that are usually seen flying around fruit and vegetables.

I really wanted to eliminate these things and the way to eliminate these flies is to destroy the place where they breed. You can do this by using drainage liquids. But for those that are already flying around, I highly suggest that you try out one of these Hanns Insect Traps.

What we use in the office is the Hanns Insect Trap Mini Wall Pro. Basically, what you do is you use the sticky paper and insert it into the insect trap. For our 47  square meter office, we usually change the paper after every 3 weeks to 1 month. We turn on the insect light trap when we get to the office and it’s on for 8 hours.

This Hanns Insect Trap Mini Wall Pro is at Php 4500. To replace the sticky paper, just lift the cover and insert the paper.

For our home, I’m thinking of buying this Hanns Insect Trap Advance Indoor. What I like about these two insect traps is that it is safe to use, especially when you have kids. It doesn’t emit any dangerous smell or doesn’t use any electricity zapping thing.

You can use it inside baby’s room and still feel safe and secure. The Hanns Insect Trap Advance Indoor is water and dust proof. It actually is very affordable at Php 1899. To save you the hassle, you can actually order this from LAZADA HERE.

This year, I really want our home and office to be squeaky clean and free of clutter and germs! I really think that these contraptions from Hanns are good investments.

Have you tried these? What do you think? Did it help you? 🙂 I’d like to know your thoughts!

I am part of the Netflix Stream Team!

How many of you watched Stranger Things? or House of Cards? These are shows that were shown on Netflix. For those who don’t know what Netflix is, it is the world’s leading internet subscription service for watching TV shows and movies. I’ve been a Netflix user since they first came out in the Philippines since January 2016. I was actually surprised to know that they are now in 190 countries! And guess what, if you are a Netflix subscriber, you are one of the 109 million members enjoying more than 125 million hours of TV shoes and movies per day!

In the Philippines, subscription is very affordable. 1 Screen Standard Definition is at Php 370. 2 Screens simultaneously used with HD Definition is at Php 460. Then, 4 screens used simultaneously in HD + Ultra HD 4K is at Php 550. All of these are paid monthly. Not bad at all, right?

I am also so excited to share with you that I am part of the Netflix Stream Team in the Philippines!
They invited me to the launch of the Stream Team which was last weekend. This is what happened during the launch! 🙂

What is so exciting about being part of this family? Well, as a part of the Stream Team, I will be able to share with you the latest updates from Netflix, plus you will learn about the different shows that will be launched via my blog! Ain’t that cool? You, my dear readers, will have the latest news on what Netflix will launch in the next few months, weeks and days.

If you haven’t subscribed to Netflix yet, I highly recommend that you start using it already.

Some of the ladies of the Netflix Stream Team Philippines!

Here are 8 things that I love about Netflix!

1 – I love the content. Aside from showing the different shows that we love and adore, they also produce their own original content. There are a lot of Netflix Originals that I love.

2 – I love that even if they are a global brand, they make it a point to go local. Netflix partners with local content creators to create original content. Aside from that, they have subtitles in different languages.

3 – I love that you can download your favorite shows. When I’m traveling, I usually just watch the episodes or movies that I have downloaded. You can also watch shows anytime, anywhere!

4 – You need not wait or look for the next episode of a series. Everything is laid out for you to watch and “binge” on!

5 – I love that Netflix has an algorithm that looks for shows that I will love! haha! It really understands me and knows what I NEED to watch! haha!

6 – It’s very kid friendly. I can set the account of my daughter and protect her from seeing violent and other inappropriate stuff. I feel safe when she’s on Netflix.

7 – I love that when I transfer device, I start from where I left off. With other platforms, that’s my main concern. I hate looking, fast-forwarding / rewinding to where I left off.

8 – I love that there are no ads! haha! I don’t think I need to explain that.

Move in with Netflix!

So these are the things that make me stick and LOVE Netflix!

Just to give you a rundown of some shows I have watched already, here is a list:

Oh My Ghost!
Gilmore Girls
Project Runway
Good Wife
My Horrible Boss
Drop Dead Diva
Billions
No Strings Attached
Bride Wars
Crazy Stupid Love
What’s Your Number?
13 Reasons Why
12 Years Promise
Hurricane Bianca
White Nights
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Don’t Trust the B in APT 23
Stranger Things
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
Full Out
GLOW
etc. etc. etc.

How about you? What have you watched? Share with me what your favorites are! I will share them soon! 🙂

JBL JR Headset: THE Headphones for Kids

I believe that children learn if they go out into the world and explore. But I, as a parent, also realize that during these times, they also need to understand how to deal with technology. It’s our responsibility as a parent to care for their safety and privacy, when they use gadgets. Do you know that 4 out 5 children from ages 2-14 have their own laptop, smartphone, game console or tablet worth an average of $300 or Php 15,000. Parents allow these children an average of 2.21 hours on their gadgets everyday.

My daughter probably uses her table and iPhone around the same number of hours per day. No matter how much activities she does and is enrolled in to keep her active, when she gets home, she really looks for these gadgets. Since I work in the evening, we ask her to use her JBL JR headphones.

Why do I like JBL JR over other headphones for kids?

  • It prioritizes safety over all other things. JBL Pure Bass sound signature tuned in for lower sound pressure level; This is so as to keep the ears of our little ones safe.
  • The JBL JR 300BT has up to 13 Hours Battery Life and 2 hours recharging time
  • You can actually charge it for 10 minutes for one hour usage.
  • I’m waiting for the JBL JR 300BT (since my daughter has the JBL JR 300) because of the BlueTooth technology. You don’t need to worry about the hassle of having wires and connect to your smartphone via BlueTooth.
  • I love the cute colors. I especially like the teal and purple one.

  • Your kids can actually personalize the headphones using the stickers that are inside the box.
  • Comfortable to wear because of the cushions on the headband and ear cups and the headbands are adjustable. Also, even is you twist it, it’s very durable.

Some of the things that I feel though that needs to be worked on more is the fit. Sometimes, it slides off the head of my daughter. She loves to dance around, so I need headphones that will really fit her head perfectly.

I love that it’s affordable at Php 2999. These headphones are available at JBL stores and dealers all over the country!

Check out our video on YouTube of the JBL JR launch in the Philippines!

Hope you check it out, too! 🙂

Zero Pest

I live in a condo unit and I love it here. One of the disadvantages though is that you can’t control what your neighbours do. For the past few months, it was a blessing that our noisy neighbours stopped shouting and arguing with each other. But the other thing that we can’t control is how clean or tidy they are. I’m assuming that some of them may not be as obsessive with germs as we are. This is prolly the reason why there are little cockroaches that I see every now and then. With this, I wanted to call on pest control professionals. I came across Zero Pest and I was really happy with the service.

I wasn’t there when they did pest control since we had to take Zeeka out of the house, but yaya, like a soldier, reported everything. She said the Zero Pest guy was very thorough. They really went through the entire house. They even explained to yaya what type of cockroaches we had. We had German cockroaches… yup, German! These are the small brown ones and not the big American ones. Anyway, for the past few days, I haven’t see any cockroaches so far.

To share the news about their company, I decided to interview the owner.

The Story of Dominic Reyes Behind Zero Pest

I worked in a call center industry for 7 years during a time when there were just a few companies. I got married and resigned. My wife and I managed a business that my wife inherited from her parents. We managed it for 3 years and sadly, it was slowly failing and we were incurring debts from suppliers. I was forced to get out of it, and tried to make money on my own to help my wife so that the business could survive. That time, I was thinking of putting up another business (but I had no capital) or going back to working in a call center.

This is, I can say one of the life changing decisions I have encountered in my life. I really didn’t know what to do. We had to pay for a lot of things. I feared a lot of things. Plus, during that time, our only son was about to go to normal school, and I can’t even afford to send him. I was crying, totally confused which path to take, so I prayed, asked God to help me and help my family. I really don’t know what to do, so I gave myself to Him and trusted Him. The following day, I received a call, someone was applying as a pest control technician. I looked up and said “You are clearly listening and talking to me, I will not look back, I will just trust You”. Then Zero Pest was born. After seven months, I told my wife to close the old business, and Zero Pest will pay the debts to the suppliers.

Interview with Dominic:

Ginger: What is your Startup/brand/business? What is it about? How long have you been in business?

Dominic: Zero Pest specializes in Pest Management, Cleaning and Disinfection Services. We have been eliminating pests and maintaining homes, commercial buildings, restaurants, residential properties, hospitals, schools, offices and hotels for 7 years.

Ginger: Who is your target market? Why did you choose this market? Can you give us the insight behind this market?

Dominic: Our market consists of Home/Residential Owners, SME’s and Institutional Accounts. For Homeowners, we simply would like to provide safe solutions to families given that common practice for pest control solution relies heavily on chemicals. We would like to promote a safer and sustainable pest management solutions to Families and Homeowners.

Ginger: How did you come up with this idea? What made you decide to start this kind of business?

Dominic: The Idea came from our cousins who are doing well from this business. But what made us fully decide is when God answered us from our troubles, and sent us a pest control technician applying for the job. I have very little idea about the industry, but I pushed for it because I consider it as His Gift.

Ginger: Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming an Entrepreneur? What are these?

Dominic: I really wanted to be an Entrepreneur even the time I was working in a call center. I most of the time feel bored, and wanted to try to do business, selling I can say is part of my DNA. When I was in college, I sold CDs and Nokia cellphones.

The main obstacle I have encountered is to fit myself in the industry. I have very little idea about it, and pests mostly are in dirty areas. One big obstacle to me is embracing the industry, but I soon realized that this industry is for me. I love nice spaces. I love luxury homes. I love hotels, and this business brought me to the best houses and opulent hotels in the country.

I can say that in all industries they are areas of dislike or not so attractive part of that industry. But at the end of the day, I’m certain that there is that best part of the industry. Also, we just all have to embrace it and learn that the reason why businesses thrive is because it resolves certain problems, so those problems can be profitable.

Ginger: What are the greatest challenges in putting up and maintaining a business in your country?

Dominic: It can be very tempting to give in to the ways of the bad practice (we all know it). But, I always push to do what is right, and so far it has been the practice of our company, doing right and being fair with all our dealings, transactions, and relations.

Ginger: What are three traits that you think an Entrepreneur/Startup Founder should have when
starting their own business?

Dominic: Persistency is one on top of my mind, everything will not go as planned, but focus your eyes on the goal, on your dream, sooner or later, you will find your way up. Also, as for me, humility is a big factor to achieve what you want. Ask for Help. I have always asked God to guide me. There are too many things to decide on, and the fact of the matter is even with due diligence, you will never know how your strategy will find its way to work. So for me, I ask Him, and most of the time, the answer that works is as long as it will benefit your customers, your employees, and your company.

Ginger: Unforgettable moments or lessons that you learned as an Entrepreneur/Startup Founder

Dominic: I used to think and desire about being number one in the industry, but that gives me so many sleepless nights, so many fears, and so many troubles in operations- unhappiness. I learned to maximize my potential and receive the results with contentment – that simply gives me joy, happiness!

Ginger: What advice can you give to other Entrepreneurs?

Dominic: Push for what is right and what is fair.

Ginger: Do you believe that everyone should become entrepreneurs?

Dominic: I have friends who are telling me “when can I be like you? I want to start my own business” but to be honest, they are actually doing very well from their work, and earning well. And they can turn off that work mode. Being an entrepreneur, true, gives you freedom from the 8-5pm work hours, but it requires you to be on call for 24 hours. I remember those days when I have to put the phone beside me when I sleep because we decided to operate 24/7. So not all, may not like to go through that, and that is surely fine. There are personalities that may fit on being an entrepreneur, but that is not a bad thing, there are some employees who are more successful than entrepreneurs, so it depends, it is a choice.

Ginger: What are ways that you can do to raise capital?

Dominic: For my case, we sold our car, we withdraw from our insurance policies, and suppliers provided longer credit terms, but we made sure that suppliers would be paid at the given term. And in doing so, we were able to gain the trust of the suppliers.

Ginger: How do you market your products? Growth strategy?

Dominic: We have tried different Marketing strategy, and one of the most effective is social media. We create stories from the problems of our customers. We get our audience informed of the pest management solutions we have for a particular pest problem of our customer.

Ginger: What are tech tools that you use for your business?

Dominic: Nowadays, a smart phone will make it work.

Ginger: Other things that you want to mention which you think are important

Dominic: Just be sincere in providing solutions to your customers, make them feel that genuine concern of help and everything follows.

Ginger: Thank you, Dominic, for sharing your story. Also, thank you to your team for getting rid of the cockroaches in our home. I really like that your team was very professional (they were actually one hour early). So for the moms and dads out there who want to try out Zero Pest, there are the contact numbers of Zero Pest.

Photobook Worldwide

I’m so worried that one day my computer may not work. I have so many files in my computer that I need to transfer most of it to a cloud storage so that my computer can function well again. And if you have seen my house, it really needs a LOT of decluttering and cleaning. The “ber” months always remind me that I have to fix things before the next year starts. KONMARI actually helped a lot (at least our cabinets and drawers for clothes are organized).  My main concern though is really where to keep pictures and other keepsakes. I have so many nice pictures that I want to print out everything and put it in frames. Having so many frames though will then again be an issue.

So my problem was how do I be reminded of the pictures that I love while keeping my place still organized. I searched for a solution and came across a site called Photobook Worldwide. This gave me the idea that I could actually “store” pictures that I love using functional products that I use on a daily basis (like mugs, bags, etc.). In Photobook Worldwide, you can create mugs, serving trays, clocks, calendars, pillows, tote bags, etc. with the pictures that you love as the design.

What I love about the site is that it’s very simple to use, and they have a wide array of products that you can choose from. Also, even if the products come from outside of the Philippines, I received my orders in just 2 days! It was really that fast.

To order the product, all you need to do is choose the product that you want to order (just like this). Then, click on personalize.

You will then be taken to a page where you can edit the product that you chose. Using this tool is very easy. You can upload pictures and drag and drop it to where you want to put them. You can add text or change the text.

I never imagined that designing a mug, tote bag, calling card and a photobook can be so much fun. This must be the reason why my friend is addicted to creating these things. Having a photo book for all the things that you have done during the past year is a good remembrance of the nice moments that happened. Also, when guests visit your home, you can just grab these from the shelf and share these moments with them.

So for the past few weeks, I have been busy making these. These are the products that I had made. I have a favorite photo of our family that our friend Louie Arcilla, professional photographer took when our daughter was one year old. I really love this photo, so I decided to use it as the photo in my personalized mug, instead of putting it on a frame. I have coffee in a daily basis, so I use this mug and it makes me happy! 🙂

Another thing that i’m excited about is co-founding a group called BFF or Beauty Fun Freelance. A group of women freelancers came together to talk about beauty, skincare, wellness, fitness, health and make-up. Because of this passion, we started a community and page on Facebook just recently. We now have close to 1000 followers.

Now, since this is a project that makes me happy and excites me, I had the logo of our group printed on a tote bag by Photobook Worldwide. Here it is in the picture below. Ain’t it nice! I feel that I can design stuff with the Photobook tool even if I know I have ZERO talent for the arts. Haha!

I also had my calling cards made at Photobook Worldwide. I often forget that I have MommyGinger.com as a “business”, too. This year, as a mompreneur, I plan to fix everything at home and at work. It was so great that I got to do all these things at the Photobook Worldwide site.

Do you want to fix some things, too? Also, these are great gifts to loved ones! For those who want to visit PhotoBook Worldwide, this is the link: http://www.photobookworldwide.com/

I am giving away a special surprise.

You can order anything at 60% off by using the code GINGER before checking out!

Cool right? What are you waiting for? Hurry and grab this great offer! Share what you have created with me, okay?

Kerygma Conference 2017

Are you feeling a bit down lately? The ber months can make you feel a bit down especially if you feel like you haven’t accomplished anything this year. But there is a great event that you can attend that’s such a great pick-me-upper and you might just find inspiration and a sense of purpose there. It’s calle the Kerygma Conference (KCON).

For three years now, I have been supporting this event by spreading the word about it. The reason is that there were a lot of times in my life where I needed to find peace and comfort. I know that I’m not the only one out there who needs these. A lot of us feel tired. Feeling natin na ang pagod pagod natin pero wala tayong nararating (We feel tired and often wonder why is it that it seems we are not accomplishing anything). KCON gives you the space to listen to where life is calling you next.

The Kerygma Conference will be from 23 to 26, 2017—on your calendar. I haven’t met anyone who regretted joining the KCON at the SMX Convention Center and SM Mall of Asia Arena. They always say it’s life-changing.

Also, there will be great speakers at the Kerygma Conference. Individually, it will cost you a lot of money just to listen to them speak for an hour. They will be there to speak to you at a mere fraction of that cost. You will hear from the country’s best speakers including Bo Sanchez, Francis Kong, Edward Lee, Dean Pax Lapid, Rex Mendoza, Karen Davila, and Mike Enriquez, among many others. International speaker Chris Padgett will also be there.

How much are the tickets?

KCON tickets cost only P2,000 (regular tickets) and P3,000 (premium tickets) for the whole four days.

Would you like to know what heaven feels like?

Join the Holy Mass and worship at the Kerygma Conference and you’ll know. It’s the closest thing to experiencing heaven on earth. They say that when you pray, you light a candle. But when 20,000 people pray together, you’re building a pillar of fire that heaven cannot help but notice. When people worship together, heaven opens up and sends down all the graces that the people need. Worship at Kerygma Conference is a life-changing moment. Miracles happen. Experience it for yourself.

Receive the love you deserve.

Maybe you have lost a loved one, someone died, or someone broke your heart. Maybe you feel unloved by the people who matter most to you. Come to the Kerygma Conference and let love heal you, fill you up, and make you whole again. Go there to receive love. Receive the love God wants to give to you. He has not forgotten you. He will finish what He has started in your life (Philippians 1:6).

God is committed to bless you. He is asking you to go on this date with Him. He is hoping you’ll be there. Receive the blessing that’s waiting for you at the Kerygma Conference.

Mad Hatter: Freelancing Demands Many Hats!

Few and far in between are the freelancers who do just one thing. Because we are essentially one-man (or one-woman!) companies, it means that whatever our specialty, we often are required to do other things, perhaps as additional services for customers, but also marketing our services to potential clients, making bids and proposals, doing our own bookkeeping and accounting, accepting payment for services rendered, and so on.

Previously, I talked about the importance of (and how to find) your niche market and the skill set to succeed in it, which forms the core of your business as a freelancer. But there are also other, auxiliary, aspects of your business that you can’t afford to ignore or neglect if you want to become a successful self-employed professional. And there are skill sets you need to develop to supplement that core business and make it more profitable.

Let’s take my life as a blogger for an example. Apart from MommyGinger.com, I also blog for ManilaReviews.com, so one way or another, I’ve been blogging for several years now. It’s all too easy to think that setting up a blog only requires that you be a good writer, but you’d be wrong about that. Here are a few basic skill sets every blogger should have:

  • Writing: You don’t have to have perfect grammar, but having the skill to effectively communicate what you want to say is vital to attracting and keeping readers. You also need to develop a particular voice and style for your blog, one that helps you connect not just with your readers’ minds but with their hearts as well.
  • Photography: In this day and age, not many people will read a solid block of text on a blog without any pictures to speak of, so you’ll have to know what attracts the eye so you can take or select good photos. This becomes even more important for food, travel, fashion, and other lifestyle blogs.
  • Technical: Yes, you can hire a designer or buy a template for your blog, but while you don’t need to learn to code, you still need to know enough to make small tweaks and adjustments to make your blog your own and troubleshoot when need be. It can be time consuming and expensive to go to a designer for every little change you want to make.
  • Marketing: If you want your blog to pay for itself, you’re probably going to be looking at advertisements and sponsorships; for personal blogs, endorsements are great too. If you want to maximize earnings and preserve the integrity of your blog, you need to have the marketing savvy to understand how the content you publish as well as the products and services you endorse fits your brand.

So just from this one example, you can see how I need to wear many hats as a blogger—and my blog is not my only business, so you can only imagine the madness that results if I don’t manage my time and my clients’ expectations properly!

Still, this multi-hatted nature of freelancing presents a two-layered challenge if you’re just starting out. First, you need to determine which skills to hone so they do you the most good and you earn the most money, and second, you’ll need to actually learn and sharpen those skills.

For the first, think of drawing a flower the way we learn it in kindergarten. The center is your core competency or specialization — your niche in the market place. Inside that “center” are the skills you absolutely need to keep your business robust. Then draw the petals around the center. Each can contain a skill set that attaches to that specialization and makes it more appealing to your clients. Now, you may need to focus on certain “petals” over others, but it’s still good to know what those other aspects are—and where to source people with those skill sets should you need them. One way to do that is to expand your network, to talk to people who are experts in those fields, join meet-ups (the Freelance Blend monthly meet-ups are great for these) or online groups.

To get a crash course in necessary skills, you can do your own research or look into workshops. In fact, you may want to check out the PayPal Freelancer Community Workshop series—more on this later. Apart from workshops like these, you can also join online courses such as those offered by Udemy, Coursera, and more. You can also find lots of video tutorials on YouTube as well as informative and inspiring information from TEDTalks and the many, many podcasts produced around different industries and interests. In this day and age, you don’t need to go back to school to go back to school, if you know what I mean!

I will always encourage exploration as a freelancer: Learn a little about a lot of things so that you can make an informed decision about the few things you want to learn a lot about. And you never know when those little bits of knowledge will come in handy when dealing with a new client or business opportunity.

And yes, you may find yourself feeling like the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland from time to time, especially if you’re a mom! We are constantly putting on and taking off different “hats” or roles, sometimes even wearing more than one at the same time.

But one of those skills you’ll have to learn is organization and time management—to find a method to the madness. In the same way you try on many different hats, then settle down with a collection of headgear that complements your looks and personal style, you should also explore the different skill sets that relate to your career, then develop the ones that you are comfortable with (or which you actually enjoy), as well as the ones that help you grow your business.

Do you have any tips or resources you’d like to share with me and other Mad Hatters reading this? If you’re keen to learn more about things that you’ll need to flourish as a freelancer, i’ll be having another session on November 18, 2017 for the PayPal Freelancer Community Workshop series. The details are on this link: http://bit.ly/PayPal5thFreelancerWorkshop

Continue to follow also the other freelance experts Fitz Villafuerte, Abe Olandres, and Liz Lanuzo. Check out the full schedule below, and join the PayPal Philippines Freelancer Community group on Facebook for updates on the venues. Hope to see you there!

Belle De Jour Planner: The Planner for Dreamers and Doers

Yesterday, I shared with you an article about realigning your life. You can read this post: http://mommyginger.com/2017/11/realign-your-life.html. The thing is, for you to successfully achieve goals, I have experienced that writing it down was really helpful in achieving these dreams. Writing it down and constantly reviewing it turned me into a DOER and not just a DREAMER. One of the tools that I use to accomplish my goals is my mighty Belle de Jour Planner.

I have been using Belle De Jour since the year 2010. Every year, I write down my plans and goals. For next year (2018), I love that the Belle De Jour Planner comes in three kinds. By the way, the 2018 BDJ planner was just launched last October 21 and 22 at the Shangri-la Plaza East Atrium. I also love that this year’s theme was celebrating uniqueness — “Dare to be you.” It was probably why there were three choices. Check out the 2018 planner in this video!

Together with the Belle De Jour Planner, the 2018 edition of the Navi Journal, Everything is Possible Planner, Focus Journal and the Essentials notebook were also showcased at the event.

The samples of the different products!

The launch of the planners and the other products was a great way to kickstart on setting your 2018 goals. There were a series of talks from Goal Gurus. There were also different activities that you could do! It was definitely a fun event. If you haven’t been to one, I highly suggest that you go to the one next year!

But going to the most crucial question, since it’s November already! My question is do you have a copy of the 2018 Belle De Jour Planner? If you do, what do you like about it? What are things that they can improve on?

If you don’t have a copy yet, please go to http://www.ilovebdj.com and grab one! Happy goal setting!
