Mommy Ginger shares interviews with momtrepreneurs that will inspire you through and through!

Laddale Borreo-Sy, M.D, Momtrepreneur behind Luli

An Interview with Momtrepreneur Laddale Borreo-Sy, M.D., General Manager of Luli

Momtrepreneur Dra. Laddale has been thinking of setting up an online all-natural baby shop for the longest time. Why this advocacy? This thought started when their first born contacted Skin Asthma/Eczema. She tells us more about her business idea in this interview. It was just last August 2012 when she took the leap and decided to give it a go. Basically, Luli is really just a baby in the industry, according to doctora, but even if the are fairly new, she continues to say that they have “been so blessed to have a roster of loyal clientele already and we are so thankful for that”.

Here is my interview with Mommy/Doctora Laddale.

Ginger: Hi Doc! Can you tell us more about your business?

Laddale: Luli is a little online shop showcasing all natural, mostly organic, multi-purpose, and locally handmade, reasonably priced products that your family and mother earth will surely love. What we carry are our favorite all-natural brands — BIODEGRADABLE AND SAFER ALTERNATIVES from the usual commercial products lingering everywhere, jam packed with harmful and unnecessary chemicals!

We carry a variety of products from Economical Cloth Diapers, Fabulous Nursing and Baby-wearing gears, Lovingly Handmade Soaps, Messy-no-more Green Cleaning Solutions, Safe and Natural Bath and Body Products, Wonderful Wooden Toys, Amazing Stain Removers (yep, still all-natural) to Marvelous Malunggay Products! And of course, since my husband and I have little princesses, we incorporated well-made “kikay” items to accessorize our babies with to make them look cuter 🙂

Ginger: Where did the name Luli come from?
Laddale: For our store name, we initially thought of lili&lulu, from our daughters’ nicknames, Lily and Lulu. We found it too long though, so we settled for Luli, which was easier to remember.

Ginger: What makes your store different from other online stores?
Laddale: What is unique is that we try as much as we can to be transparent, honest and generous with product information. If applicable and amenable to our suppliers, we include manufacturing dates, best before dates, expiration dates, prices per given volume/weight, dimensions, product container, etc. of the products we carry. We try our best to give you a visual feel of our product line. In so doing, we believe, that you will get the best of what you are looking for.

We also are strong advocates of REDUCE, REUSE, REUSE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. We try as much as we can to be resourceful and eco-friendly as possible with our packaging. So don’t expect fancy pansy wrappings and colorful, brand new boxes on our shipments. What’s more important is that the product inside and packaging outside are safe for you, and safe for the environment 🙂

Ginger: Who is your market?
Laddale: Luli caters to like minded individuals who believe in the benefits of natural, organic and earth-friendly products. Families who share our advocacy of natural parenting would also find our store a one-stop shop for their needs as well.

Ginger: How did you come up with this idea? What made you decide to start this kind of business?
Laddale: Everything started when Liliane, our first daughter was diagnosed with Atopic Dermatitis (Skin Asthma/Eczema). After exhausting commercial medications to provide relief of her itching and dry skin, we started researching for more worry-free and hopefully more effective and economical remedies to soothe her symptoms. Our search for these alternative drived our thirst for everything natural and organic. And because these products delivered their function very well (so far no flare-ups of her itch-scratch cycle since we started her on naturals), we decided why not share this wonderful advocacy that is natural parenting to fellow Filipinos. Hence, Luli.

But the number 1 reason for our pursuance of this venture is our decision to provide the best care and guidance to our precious little girls, especially in the crucial first 3 years of their lives. We believe that this can only be accomplished well if parents will be very hands-on at home. And since I temporarily postponed my hospital training, I still wanted to help provide for our family, so we decided that we open a small online store. To be honest, income isn’t much in this business. But the happiness brought about by being a Work-At-Home Mom is enough to fuel start-up of this business. And income is income, no matter how minimal.

Ginger: Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a momtrepreneur? What are these?
Laddale: Being a business nincompoop, probably is the number 1 challenge for me. Those 9 cumulative years I spent in becoming a licensed physician obviously didn’t have any business 101s. But with guidance and support from my family and fellow momtrepreneurs, and of course with God’s blessings, I am, so far, coping with these challenges. Also, we don’t have any help at home and I do most of the cooking, household chores and business operations. We are still in the process of mastering time management, but we’re slowly getting there.

Ginger: What do you think are the three traits that a momtrepreneur should have when starting their own business?
Laddale: Actually, you only need just 1 — PASSION. Passion drives everything in this business. When you are genuinely passionate in what you do, faith, hardwork, patience, trustworthiness and good client relations, becomes automatic.

Ginger: What advice can you give to other Momtrepreneurs?
Laddale: I’m very honored to be asked of this question. We are still new in the business but being asked for advice to fellow Momtrepreneurs and those planning to venture in this business is very humbling. To my fellow WAHMs, just keep your passion torch burning and continue to innovate, create, inspire and impart knowledge and skills to our fellowmen. To our would be Momtrepreneurs or those thinking on getting into being WAHMs, GO FOR IT! Don’t overthink! Remember we are women, blessed with powerful instincts. If you feel that this is good for you and your family, just do what research you can, and then go for it! We may feel doubtful or timid at times but these are just normal feelings for mothers thinking of leaving work to stay and work at home. But of course none of these will be possible without blessings from our Almighty, so prayers really are very important. We should continue to learn, strive hard and pray to be able to sustain.

Ginger: Thank you, Dr. Laddale, for your time! We are looking forward to interview you again in the future. Wishing you continuous success in your business.

Angelica Dimayuga from Honeybaby: Quirky Hats and Hair Accessories

An Interview with Momtrepreneur Angelica Dimayuga, Mompreneur/Owner of Honeybaby

Mommy Angelica is mom to baby Kiel, who is 1 year old this January. Angelica always wanted to start a business, but never knew what kind she wanted to create and build. “I didn’t really want to be an employee forever, if you get what I mean..” Angelica says. At that time, Angelica was a Landscape Architect who used to work for an outsourcing company for an international firm. When she and her husband decided that she’d be a full-time housewife (to breast feed and be a hands-on parent), she had it in the back of her mind that she also wanted to be a WAHM someday. This was to still be able to help her husband earn for our family. Putting up an online shop is one thing she was set to do, aside from her job as a virtual assistant.

Hoot Hats

Here is my interview with Mommy Angelica.

Ginger: Hi Angelica! First of all, can you tell us more about your business? What is it about and how long have you been in business?

Angelica: The store’s tagline: Mommy-picked, one-of-a-kind baby/kids hats, headbands, and hair accessories, I think briefly describes what the brand/business is all about. Honeybaby is an online boutique of various toppers, from the quirkiest to the most adorable, well, at least I’d like to think so.

I just launched my shop June of 2012, so it’s fairly new. So I still consider myself a newbie in the online business. I get my products from different suppliers/manufacturers both locally and abroad. I am still in the stage of trying out different products, checking and comparing which has the best quality and what the consumers are most fond of. And so I am constantly on the lookout for other adorable baby hats and headbands that I could add to my selection.

Ginger: Who do your think your target market is?

Angelica: Modern-day (quirky) parents like my husband and I, who are fond of trying out new things for their little ones, especially if it adds to their “cuteness” factor (haha).

Ginger: It’s quite and interesting concept. How did you come up with this idea?

Angelica: It was actually my husband who thought of the idea. It started when we had a photoshoot with our baby, and the studio had a cute bear hat that we (secretly) wanted for ourselves (hihi), because it was so cute! I tried looking for hats similar to the studio props, but there were none available locally. There were fancy crochet hats online, but just as I was about to order, hubby said why not try selling them here and be the one to offer them locally? I think it was just him thinking out loud, but it sounded like a bright idea back then. And it clicked, thankfully!

Ginger: I’m sure that you encountered some obstacles along the way when you decided to pursue becoming a momtrepreneur. What are these?

Angelica:
Capital. First off, you need money to start a business. Since I was a fulltime mom (who recently quit her office job), I had to ask my husband if he could “invest” in my business. Good thing, he’s very supportive.

Marketing. Since the product is “new”, most parents would think twice (or many more times) before they’d buy a hat! I must admit, it’s quite a hard sell, and I have to be extra “convincing” how I present/market my products, especially at bazaars! You have to be (extra) active in Social Media Marketing (SMM) just to get the word out. Getting referrals from happy customers is always a joy. I also got to make friends with mommy bloggers, photographers, and some of my customers.

Last but definitely not least: Juggling motherhood and business. I have been an “independent” mommy ever since, and by that I mean, I have no yaya at all since I gave birth. But that’s a different story… I have had my crazy days when my time and attention is split between the business and taking care of my baby, breastfeeding to boot! But along the way, I’ve learned some “tricks” and developed an ideal routine..and it’s still a learning process, especially now that my son is almost a toddler.

Ginger: What is your long term dream for Honeybaby?
Angelica: I plan to design my own hats. I’m actually looking for local manufacturers/suppliers, because I want to support our local craftsmen. I also want to see my products in baby stores 🙂 This is why I started my online shop in the first place, because no local stores retailed quirky hats.

Ginger: What are three traits that you think a momtrepreneur should have when starting their own business?

Angelica:
Passion and Perseverance. I think these go as a pair. Any business needs the passion to start it and perseverance to keep it going!

Creativity. If you plan to be an online seller like me, build an eye-catching website that is user-friendly. My husband and I conceptualized and did the site ourselves. Think of a catchy phrase or tagline that is true to your brand, and a simple but memorable Shop Logo to go along with it. Be creative in all your marketing strategies, like host giveaways or offer something new.

Optimism. You always have to think positive however bad a situation may be. Like, if you didn’t make a sale this week, if packages get delayed etc. Just breathe, and don’t let the stress get to you. Like the saying goes, “Keep calm and carry on”. Before you know it, you’l be busy processing orders the following week.

Ginger: What advice can you give to other Momtrepreneurs?

Angelica: Always have time for your family. Yes, keeping an eye on the business is important but family still comes first. Besides, you also need a break! Remember that you are first and foremost a wife and a mother, it is your number one responsibility.

Don’t loose it! You can never escape persistent customers, however annoying they can be sometimes. Be very patient with them, after all, you’re trying to please them. It’s not just about the sale, but about making (and keeping) connections. A good feedback from your customers is always very helpful.

Ginger: Thank you so much, Angelica! We learned so much about you and your business today. I know a lot of moms learned and were inspired by your story.
