My little girl will start going to school this August. Last year, she would go home before lunch time. Her schedule this year goes beyond lunch, so i’ll be sending her both morning snacks and lunch. My dilemma now is how to make her EAT her food! My daughter is such a picky eater. Even if she’s hungry, she’ll just nibble a little bit into things that I send her. I’m having a hard time looking for food for kids that will be both nutritious and fun to eat.
When the opportunity to learn how to make Bento boxes came, I grabbed it. We had an intimate event given by Gold Seas Tuna Chunks and it was a session with Bento by Kat. I know about her because I follow her IG account, and what she creates is so amazing. I always love going to Gold Seas Tuna events because for one, I am a hoarder! haha! I always keep cans of Gold Seas Tuna Chunks in my kitchen. I also love going to their events because I always feel like I’m an “empowered” mom after. LOL!
The first event that I went to last year (or was it early this year; I can’t remember) was a cooking event. I was taught how to cook simple dishes (Read it here: SIMPLE TUNA DISHES THAT YOU WILL LOVE FROM GOLD SEAS TUNA) Woot woot! AND, I hardly cook, so having cooked two dishes really gave me the confidence to cook more for my family (which I did).
Then this time around, we were inspired to create our our #BentoyourGoldSeas boxes for our kids. I’m not an artistic person, so for me to complete the task, I had to step it up and listen carefully to Kat.
I was actually so proud of myself, because I got to create this!
So this is healthy food for kids that you can send as “baon”. The food on the lower right hand side of the YummyBox are Tuna Cakes. This is how you make them:
TUNA CAKES (7-8 patties)
1 can Gold Seas Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil, drained
1 large Potato
Salt to taste
Oil from Tuna Can
1. Peel potatoes and slice into smaller pieces. Boil until soft for about 20 minutes. Drain and mash.
2. Mix the tuna chunks and mashed potatoes. Add egg and mix well.
3. Form into patties.
4. Lightly oil a non-stick skillet using the olive oil from the tuna can.
5. Fry until golden brown.
There you go! This is perfect for bringing to school. My daughter loved it!
Have you created bento boxes before? Hope you can share with me some of your recipes!
“People needed someone that didn’t require a warrant or shield to get things done. Call it a vigilante, or a superhero. Call it what you will, but like it or not, I finally accepted that that someone had to be me.” ―Luke Cage
There’s something that draws me towards the Marvel Netflix Series. The more I watch it, the more I love it. I have grown to love The Defenders and their individual series. I especially love Luke Cage and Iron Fist, these heroes for hire. And yesterday, I was part of the Netflix Stream Team (#NetflixAPCC). I got to see the stars of these two shows and their show runners. Seeing them and getting to know more about them made me love the show, the characters and the people running the show even more.
Here are the things that make me love these shows more:
The Netflix Marvel universe seems to have a very encouraging environment, allowing everyone in the team to feel comfortable and loved.
While listening to the invited guests talk in their respective panels, there was one thing that I sensed was stressed in both panels (Luke Cage’s panel and Iron Fist’s panel). They highlighted the fact that each one in the team know that they have a role to play, but each one helps others in the team to make these shows successful. Mustafa (John Mclever / Bushmaster) tells a nice story about his audition. Usually, when actors audition for roles, the show runner would sit on a table which was at a distance from the stage. In his audition, Mustafa says that Show runner Cheo Hodari Coker went upfront (near the stage) and read the lines with him. When it got to the point where he had to pretend to shoot Cheo, Cheo really played the role and dropped dead on the floor. Mustafa appreciates this and says that with this, he really felt confident and lost all nervousness.
The actors and actresses in the series are almost given the same treatment as the lead role.
In a story (especially if it shares a depiction of “real life”), characters live and interact with other people. In order to fully appreciate the lead characters, you will need to go through the characters surrounding them and how each one contributes to solidifying the role of the lead. I love how the show runners, writers and the production team make most of the characters go through some sort of character metamorphosis. We see, not only the main character, evolve. We see the Bushmaster, Mariah, Shades, Misty, Colleen, Mustafa, etc. go through a character transformation which always keeps us on our toes.
It was so refreshing (and you would be able to feel it, too) to see and hear that both Mike Colter and Finn Jones don’t have the “diva-like” behaviour that you think a lead character would have. Cheo Hodari Coker mentions that Mike arrives early at their set and he knows and has memorized his lines. Raven Metzner, showrunner of Iron Fist, says that Finn always trains and practices hard. Hearing Finn also say that he appreciates Clayton Barber (fight coordinator of the show) is just amazing.
And finally, I love that the story of both these 2 shows, encourages each one of us to be heroes.
I think in the Philippines, most of us are still hopeful and optimistic about how and where our country will be in the next few years. We know that we can achieve success if each one does their part to be the heroes that each one can be. I love Luke Care and Iron Fist, because both series are very relatable. Both shows also have deep lessons to be learned and have characters that we each can relate with.
So, let’s get on and watch these shows. I suggest though that you watch it in this order:
How to watch the Marvel Netflix Series in order
Daredevil Season 1
Jessica Jones Season 1
Daredevil Season 2
Luke Cage Season 1
Iron Fist Season 1
Jessica Jones Season 2
Luke Cage Season 2
And finally, Marvel’s Iron Fist season 2! And I can’t believe I was one of the first who watched it. And guess what, we also watched EPISODE 1.
My thoughts on IRON FIST SEASON 2
I know most of us would have loved to see Daredevil Season 3 first, but after having seen Season 1 of Iron Fist, I’m glad that they came out with this first. I love how new characters were introduced and I love the faster pace of the story. After unveiling and solidifying the character of Danny in Season 1, it’s so refreshing to see a more confident and solid character for Danny. And as usual, I loved how bad-ass Colleen is, and how very well-grounded on her values and virtues she is (or will she still be?? haha). I don’t want to give too much information, but seriously, you need to watch the upcoming season of Iron Fist.
Give it a chance, peeps! It won’t disappoint.
I really enjoyed going to Asiapo Comicon 2018. I am proud to be part of the Netflix Stream Team. Were you at the Asiapop Comicon 2018? What did you enjoy? Share your thoughts with us!
The world of Disney has shaped our childhood for the longest time.
As a child, I remember twirling around in my long skirts, pretending to be a princess in a ballgown. I admired Mulan’s bravery and wit and cried my eyes out when Mufasa fell into his death in the stampede. I also loved playing with my pots and pans, pretending I was Belle and they were Chip and Mrs. Pots.
I was so excited when I found out that I was having a baby girl. I looked forward to reliving my childhood with Zeeka and watching my favorite Disney movies with her.
But did you know that Disney fans like us can now enjoy their favorite Disney movies anywhere we go?
Globe Telecoms has partnered with The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia to bring us DisneyLife: The World of Disney in One App.
Now Disney fans can enjoy over 350 movies from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars all in one place. The app also gets you access to more than 5,000 kids’ TV episodes and over 6,000 music tracks at the palm of your hands.
The DisneyLife app offers fan-favorite stories, characters, and music from iconic Disney movies and television shows over the years. Fans can take a look back and reminisce the heart-warming moments from movies like The Lion King and Up.
Check out DisneyLife app’s launch with Mickey and Minnie Mouse together with Head of Media Distribution and OTT, The Walt Disney Company South Asia Amitra Pandey, EVP & Managing Director, The Walt Disney Company South Asia Mahesh Samat, Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu and Globe Chief Commercial Officer Albert De Larrazabal.
Enjoy the awesome animation from Pixar like The Incredibles. Love Star Wars? Watch your favorite stories any time of the day. And since we’re fans of the Marvel Universe, Zeeka and I especially enjoy Marvel movies in the app like Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3.
Kids of all ages also get access to new episodes of their favorite shows first on DisneyLife. Your favorite series can also be streamed from Disney Kids’ TV’s biggest library. This includes Disney Channel’s Big Hero 6, Tangled, Disney Junior’s Mickey and the Roadster Racers, and Disney XD’s Spiderman and Star Wars Rebels.
If you love Disney’s iconic soundtracks like me, you’d be happy to know that DisneyLife also gives its users access to a super extensive library. Have fun singing along to your beloved hits from Disney’s TV series and movies.
I remember when Coco came out. I wanted to watch the movie with my family because like everyone else, I got curious about the trailer. But what surprised me the most was Zeeka’s reaction to the movie.
I was surprised with how emotional she became while watching. I mean, who won’t be emotional with Miguel’s song? And who wasn’t surprised to know that Coco wasn’t the name of the boy?
It’s the magic of discovery that I love the most about Disney, and the lesson that good will always win if you persevere. That’s what makes Disney movies so appealing to everyone.
With DisneyLife, I could relive the same magic with Zeeka whenever we want. We could wander through the vast ocean with Moana and Maui. We could sing along with Ana and Elsa and their breakout hits from Frozen. And we could definitely dance to the catchy tunes of Coco all in the palm of our hands.
The good news is, Globe customers will get awesome perks with the app.

This July, I planned a trip to go to Hong Kong with a colleague, Trish, to represent Taxumo (my tech startup). We got discounted tickets because they were celebrating women in tech. Not a lot of women are in this industry. We’re attending RISE, a tech conference. Everything was all set and we were ready-to-go, until someone and something came up. That someone was my daughter Zeeka, and that something was this new “Carnivale of Stars” at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL).
Part of the Carnivale of Stars are the all-new atmosphere stage show “Moana: A Homecoming Celebration,” the “We Love Mickey!” Projection Show, and a new African-style Karibuni Marketplace.
We didn’t think of turning this trip into a vacation (initially, my husband was supposed to stay in Manila), but honestly, we felt guilty. The reason why we, as parents, decided to spend the last part of the trip in HKDL was that we want Zeeka to know that family time is important, too. We’ve been focusing on building our startup, that we have been spending less time with her.
Since we’re talking about Moana, we thought of how her grandmother was so supportive of her desire to go on an adventure — which then led to personal growth and new experiences. As parents, “adventures” like these are necessary for our children to grow and learn. We’ve noticed that during our travels and family bonding activities, Zeeka picks up new things, learns to be more creative, becomes more open to new ideas and to new ways of thinking and we grow closer together as a family.
So, we are really looking forward to spending time in Hong Kong Disneyland Resort as a family this summer!
Zeeka’s so excited to go to the “Moana: A Homecoming Celebration” which is in a new exotic outdoor venue called Jungle Junction, in Adventureland. Moana will invite guests to join her adventure in a 20-minute live show rich with inspirational music, dance, puppetry and immersive storytelling. When I told her what she should expect, Zeeka bought a mini Moana-like locket in a store which she said she’ll bring on her adventure.
In Adventureland, you will also find the Karibuni Marketplace, which is next to Theater in the Wild. This area will take you through a lively African ambiance with interactive games such as the Wheel of Fortune, Blongo Balls and Plinko where you could win souvenirs!
In the evening, Minnie Mouse and her pals are inviting guests to a surprise party for Mickey Mouse as part of Disney’s all-new “We Love Mickey!” Projection Show. We all obviously love Mickey! My daughter had a blast and she still remembers the time she met Mickey in Japan. I’m sure she’ll go crazy when I tell her that we’re throwing a party for Mickey! This new celebration transforms the buildings of Main Street, U.S.A. into a canvas for vibrant, colorful visuals that pay tribute to Mickey’s major milestones. I can’t wait to see this!
These will run from June 21 to September 2! We’ll be there sometime July, so I came across this at the perfect time! Zeeka doesn’t start school until August so this is the perfect vacation for her.
Aside from the things I mentioned, she will definitely enjoy seeing her favorite Disney∙Pixar characters leading HKDL’s first-ever “Pixar Water Play Street Party!” From June 21 onwards, we can all meet Mr. and Mrs. Incredible from The Incredibles, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their pals from Toy Story, along with other Disney∙Pixar stars in this water-based celebration. My husband and I love The Incredibles (We already watched Incredibles 2! They remind us so much of ourselves! LOL!) so we will definitely have a picture taken with Mr. and Mrs. Incredible at the “The Incredibles Arrive!”
For the total Disney Experience and just for plain convenience, parents may want to stay at any of the 3 nearby uniquely themed hotels for a “play, shop, dine, and stay” total Disney holiday experience. All the 3 hotels adjusted to the theme! The “Adventures of Oceania” poolside party at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel will entice young guests to join poolside games! A Disney friend is ready to have fun with guests at an afternoon poolside party at the Rain Drop Pool at Disney Explorers Lodge.
Do you know that you can also have your room customized? How amazing is that? For HK$600 (from June 21 onwards), guests can have their hotel rooms decorated with the theme of The Incredibles. The room decoration package includes themed bed runners, slippers, door stickers, amenities kits, sweet delights plus two water bottles and a set of kid’s utensils!
Guests staying at the resort’s hotels will receive at least one Priority Admission Pass for selected attractions, as well as the season’s exclusive souvenirs, including an amenities box, Disney slippers and door stickers.
Committed to creating memorable stays for guests, HKDL is introducing an all-new Express Online Check-in service in late-April, allowing guests to complete online check-in within 7 days prior to their arrival day to simplify the check-in process on arrival. For those with weird flight schedules, guests can now spend a day at the theme park before checking into the hotel. They can make use of the Luggage Valet Service to have their bags transferred to their hotel for a fee and make the most of their time at the park! Great time-saver!
Guests can start planning their magical journey with the following attractive offers:
There are over 100 exclusive, summer-themed memorabilia at the park that will be extended this summer to include new collections of Duffy and friends series with exotic fruit themes. I am excited to get The Incredibles souvenirs which will be available for the first time. I’m ready to get superhero shirts and apparel! To get ready for school or to add spice to your school supplies, grab Tsum Tsum school bags, utensils and more. Specially designed Moana outfits and necklaces which look just like Moana’s in the film will also be available for guests to dress up like their favorite heroine.
It doesn’t end there!
Seasonal entertainment like “Carnivale of Stars” will continue and change all throughout the year. The Disney Halloween Time will start in September. Jack Skellington of The Nightmare Before Christmas will set the mood for this Disney theme.
From November to January 1, 2019, Mickey and friends will share Christmas carols for a heart-warming celebration of “A Disney Christmas,” as Christmas tree lighting and romantic snowfalls create a memorably festive experience for guests.
The transformation of Hong Kong Disneyland’s castle is fully underway. The transformed castle will pay tribute to 13 Disney Princess stories (something all our little ladies will love!!!) and take the park to new heights with all-new day and nighttime entertainment.
We’re super excited to go on this adventure! This is the first time that we’ll be visiting Hong Kong Disneyland as a family. We’ll share photos with you.
If you think I missed anything (anything that I should do during our visit to HKDL), please do let me know! 🙂 I will add it to my list.
There are two things that I consider before sending my child to a school. The first one is the method of teaching. It has to be aligned with my objective of teaching my child through play (since she’s still young) and teaching her using actual things that she will experience in her daily life. The second one is if it takes into consideration the flexibility that a school should have, and adjust to what a child needs. Every child is different, so you can’t really treat all of them the same way.
Oh, I have one more thing that I consider and that’s proximity.
For those who are in Makati, I will highly recommend this school that we visited. It’s a preschool in Makati. It’s called Carsoncrest International School, a franchisee of Clarenter Education, U.S. and is authorized to offer the International Preschool Curriculum (IPC). At the moment, they are offering the following programs:
International Toddler (2 years old) Program
International Nursery (3 years old) Program
International Prekinder (4 years old) Program
International Kinder (5 years old) Program – Starts next year (2019) This is that start establishing the K-to-12 department
Check out our visit to Carsoncrest International School, a preschool in Makati!
What is IPC or the International Preschool Curriculum?
The International Preschool Curriculum embodies the best in academic research and practices. It is aligned to meet or exceed the standards of all major education systems making it the most internationally accepted early childhood education curriculum in the world. From Singapore Math to UK Literacy, the IPC has had to meet some of the most stringent standards to be truly international (for more information visit www.ipc.education).
What I like about the International Preschool Curriculum or IPC is that Carsoncrest International School’s students will be exposed to the following:
If you want to check out this school, there will be available summer classes at Carsoncrest International school in cooperation with Manila Workshops. This will be posted in the events page (announcement will be in a few days): http://manilaworkshops.com/events
