Early this month, I got an email from one of the brands that I love, Safeguard. They were asking us if Zeeka and I would be interested to go to Singapore to go on a Safeguard Science Discovery Tour. I said “yes”, of course! Who would say no to a vacation “date” with my daughter where we get to learn new things, too? It’s basically the perfect combination of two aspects of my life — time with my daughter and learning!
Everything went on quickly and before we knew it, we had packed our bags and were in the airport at 4:30 am. I personally was so *kilig* to be amidst really great mom bloggers and influencers like Cat, Jackie, Shari, Nikka, Kath, Lace and Rochelle. We actually talked about syncing outfits for the trip! This bunch was a good group to travel with.

On the plane, Zeeka was so behaved! 🙂

Mommy Ginger and Zeeka — landed in Singapore!

Inside the bus!
We landed safely in Singapore at around 11:20 am. We were picked up by our tour guide, Patrick. Patrick was a funny guy. When you ask Zeeka now what she wants to be, she will tell you that she wants to be like Patrick, a tour guide. He certainly made a great impression with the kids. We arrived at Hotel Chancellor, which was along Orchard road around noon. We had “free time” that entire afternoon, so Zeeka and I decided to hit the mall after eating at a Hawkers place with Carla from Parenttown and Rochelle.

eating lunch!
I loved that the location of hotel was very strategic. Orchard road was walkable and there were a lot of malls nearby. That afternoon, I got to grab a cup of coffee from Starbucks to which Zeeka said, “Starbucks agaaaain, Mommy?!”. I also got to purchase a cash register toy for her, which I may add was a good decision since that made her get up right way the next morning (just to play with it).

With Cat and Asher, Jackie and Gabbie, Shari and Selene and Nikka and Michelle 🙂
That evening, we had dinner with the P&G representative at Pizza Mozzeria at Marina Bay Sands. We were especially excited for what will happen the next day!
The Safeguard Science Discovery Tour
We had to travel to the Safeguard Innovation Centre at 8:00 am. We were welcomed at the lobby of the P&G Office. As I gathered, this is where Research and Development is done. This was the first time that they were opening their doors to outsider to actually learn more about germs and see how Safeguard bar soaps are made. Zeeka, I and the rest of the party were really excited.
We were then led to the conference room for a short briefing on the history of Safeguard. Safeguard antibacterial skin care was launched in 1966, as an effective way of removing germs and inhibiting germ regrowth. From a marketing perspective, I think they did a very good job in preserving the brand equity.

Alex Vogler, P&G Beauty Digital Communications APAC head, taking us through the history of Safeguard.
We each had our own lab coats and glasses! Zeeka and I both loved the feeling that we were like scientists trying to discover something amazing!
We were then led to a room which looked like a home. This was where the kids were taught about germs by being germ hunters! Three of them where given UV flashlights and all of them had to look for the part of the house where most of the germs were found.
After the Germ hunting activity, the mommies where led to listen to Safeguard’s research and development team and health experts from the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) on modern day germ threats and how Safeguard provides superior skin germ protection through live and exciting demonstrations and activities. Prior to our flight to Singapore, PAMET Experts visited our house and collected germ samples. During our discussion, they gave us the type of germs that were found in our homes. One of the germs found was Streptococcus, which actually causes Pneumonia. The other one is E. coli Shigella Campylobacter which causes diarrhea. As a mom, it was so scary to think that these were actual germs that are inside OUR HOUSE!

Angelica Caranza, Microbiology Section Head of the P&G Singapore Innovation Center talks about different types of germs and the diseases and infections they can cause
Could we do anything to avoid infection and diseases? Of course, we can. One of the things that we can do is regularly wash our hands. I cannot stress the importance of this. Not to scare you but here are some trivia on germs and bacteria.
- The number of bacteria that live in and on us outnumber our own human cells by ten to one.
- Common cold, flu and stomach viruses can live on our fingertips for hours and they survive on the surfaces of objects for days.
- 80% of all infections, from the common cold and flu to Ebola fever, are transmitted by people touching one another or touching objects that others have touched.
- According to a Mayo clinic slogan, “The ten worst sources of contagion are our fingers”. We touch our eyes, noses, and mouths, more than twenty times a day.
- Phones have been found to have up to 4200 bacteria from fecal contamination. Safe drinking water should have less than 1 bacteria per 100ml.
While typing this, I was reading it out loud to my husband, and he told me to stop it. “Gross, gah!” These facts are super scary, but I am at ease reading this because I use Safeguard at home. After the lecture on germs, we were shown how Safeguard bars are made and what makes it effective in combating germs.

Check this out! I made this — well, the stamp at least! haha!
Safeguard with Germshield+ technology can fight a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi, preventing more types of sickness, malodour, and skin infection. The proprietary Germshield+ technology stops the regrowth of bacteria and fungi up to 24 hours, thereby providing optimal protection. What’s more, is that Safeguard does this while protecting and keeping your skin’s moisture! This was proven in an activity that they kids did.
They had to wash petals in three dishes: One with watere (just water), one with Safeguard liquid soap, and the last one with a competitor’s soap. As you can see, the petal with Safeguard was still fresh and intact. Zeeka’s petal in the competitor’s dish turned lack on the edges and tore 🙁
That day made me think of the choices that I make for my family. The truth is that you can never run away from germs, but you can choose the perfect tool that you can use to combat them. I am glad that I have discovered the benefits of using Safeguard and I’m really proud to be part of the Safeguard Family.
