Why you should Enter Entrepreneurship? Check out this Webinar Series

The buzz word nowadays is Entrepreneurship. It seems like everyone is going that route. Everyone wants to get into it. Everyone’s starting their own businesses. Every one wants to be called an Entrepreneur.

I’ve thought about why people should try to “enter entrepreneurship” and here are some of the reasons why:

1) Control your one time — control your own life!
Being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean that you will have less work. In fact, during the first year of business, you might be the busiest that you’ll ever be. But the nice thing about being an entrepreneur is that you actually have more control over your time. You can move schedules around. This is what I actually love about my life now. If I don’t feel like working, I don’t get up. I just see to it though, that I accomplish things and that I always see results.

2) Unlimited Opportunities to Earn and to Learn
I used to think (especially when I was about to resign from my job) that I would be a bored individual, just going through the daily grind of creating workshops and writing for my blog and other entities. I used to think that I wouldn’t be able to meet a lot of people as the way I did when I was employed. I’m a people person so I love going out and conversing with others. But when I became an entrepreneur, I got to widen my network four-fold. Almost every day, I get to meet a new person, in person or virtually. I receive at least two to three emails from people I don’t know every day. If you multiply that, that’s at least 1095 new people a year!

But what I genuinely love about meeting new people is that I get to learn new things! I see meetings as an opportunity to learn and to widen my knowledge about different things. Being an entrepreneur allowed me to go out there and look for new acquaintances and learn more new stuff!

3) Allow you to do the things that you want so you can leave a Legacy!

I don’t know if you saw this episode for GTV: Love the Leap recently.

I talked about leaving a legacy, which I realized after reading Stephen Covey’s 8th habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness. I honestly believe that all of us are meant for greatness. When we pass away, I’m sure that each one of us want to be remembered for something — a loving mom, a great educator, an admirable social entrepreneur, but all of these things stem from the fact that we had a goal of making the world a better place and we helped by using our talents. Everyday, we help make the world a better place the best we know how. Being an entrepreneur makes you think about this every day. With the business that I have, how can I add value?

These three things are just a few reasons why I think people should try to enter entrepreneurship. For those who are already entrepreneurs, they know that there are a lot of things that you need to learn in order to sustain the business that you have. For skills and things that you don’t know about, it’s good to know at least the basics so that even if you decide to outsource in the end, you still have a good understanding on how things work.

With this, Burn Gutierrez and I decided to come up with a Webinar Series called Enter Entrepreneurship with topics that we know you would love to learn about!

Support Group for Women Who Want to Start their Own Businesses

I came from a radio interview yesterday morning. My friend, April and I were interviewed for the Steps Project. It was for a show in DZRJ called Mind Your Own Business. The show is hosted by Atty. Nikki De Vega, a lawyer who gives tips and advice to people who want to start their own business. It’s really a cool show and you, guys, should listen to it!

My longest media interview so far!

My longest media interview so far!

Before the show, we were chatting and we learned that she (the host) already has a 1 year and 8 months daughter. She had a hard time breastfeeding for a long time since after three days, she needed to go back to work. She was telling us how hard it is to express milk in an environment that doesn’t give much leeway for women. She told us that in her firm, she’s the only woman lawyer and it’s so hard to excuse yourself to do “lady stuff”. Pregnant women or women with children will find it hard to thrive in a world like this.

Not all companies are understanding of what we women go through, especially when we get pregnant and have our children. Not all will understand that you have to excuse yourself from work at least three times a day just to express milk. Not everyone will understand why you have to suddenly leave work at the middle of the day to attend to your child who has suddenly gone ill from eating too much ice cream. Not everyone will understand how important PTA meetings are of how important recognition day is.

Those are the perks of being a mompreneur. You manage your own time and make room for things like these that really matter. Family then becomes your number 1 priority and your career becomes secondary. I’m not saying that the business is not important. What I’m saying is that as a mompreneur, you are your own boss and you call the shots. Yes, the business needs your attention so the skills now that you have to learn are time management and becoming driven.

Not a lot of women make this decision to jump the gun and start their own business. You have to have the right mindset and the “heart” for it. That is why the title of our first mastermind session (which is the second run for 2014, btw) is How to Have the Heart of a WAHM.

I’m sure those subscribing to Manila Workshops’ newsletter get to read about these Masterminds. Ladies, masterminds are not like our usual workshops where people come in and sit and listen. The masterminds is a support group for ladies who want to start their own business or for those who are still figuring out if they want to start their own business. These masterminds are conversations. There is a moderator, but all the attendees do the talking.

WAHM Masterminds

I have been to most of the runs of the previous run and I am really pushing for people to attend these sessions. We have had a lot of people realize what they want to do or what they are capable of doing. Most realize that they need to start creating their businesses already. The most important part of these sessions is that you get support and tips from ladies like you, business-minded and all. You can even network and sometimes even get business partnrs or suppliers from these group of people. Lovely, right?

It’s not too late to sign up! All you have to do is go to Mothercare Active Fun on Saturday at 10:45am and sign up. Fee to join the session is at Php 600. The first session is sponsored by Mothercare Philippines and Unilab. BTW, Mothercare Active Fun is along 9th Street in BGC, just across the Honda Car Dealer in the area.

So, hope to see you there!

How to Create a Business Plan and other Realizations this Easter

Hope you had a great day last Sunday! I love Easter. That day was basically a day for resting and contemplating on a lot of stuff, including my businesses. The celebration of Christ’s resurrection has made me think of resetting and making adjustments in certain portions of my life. Whether Catholic or not, there will come a point in your life when you want to make these adjustments. My article yesterday was about resetting portions and certain aspects of my life and it focused on the “physical changes” that I want for myself. Today, I will focus on making adjustments in business.

Whether still on the planning stage or already in the stage of expansion, there is always that need to step back and view the business from afar. By stepping back, you get to see the bigger picture.

The problem with sole proprietorship, start up businesses and businesses that are ran from home, oftentimes, it’s just one person working on different tasks. Or if it’s being worked on by a group, each one focuses on the task that is given to him or to her. No one really looks at the bigger picture and decides or tells the others if they are going toward the right direction. With this, there should be a time when everyone should take a step back and see if the business is really going towards the direction that they set for it.

This is exactly also why business plans are needed.

A business plan is a documentation that guides everyone so that they can make certain decisions on their own. Believe me, I have had a lot of experiences with different entities (being a part of some or just observing from a distance) and I have learned from a lot of these. Failures arise if the plan is not clear in your mind or if members make decisions that are not aligned with the organization’s plans and direction.

For those who want to learn how to create a business plan, please do sign up for the Mastermind Session for this coming weekend. It will be held on April 26 from 11:00 am to 2:30pm at Mothercare Active Fun. I will be the facilitator for this mastermind class, so I really hope that you could join me. We will discuss how to create a business plan for your business. You can also ask me about business strategies and I will share you tips on how to analyze and make sound business decisions.

Mastermind Session 3: How to Create a Business Plan

Mastermind Session 3: How to Create a Business Plan

Okay, so looking at the businesses that I am involved in, I think I personally need to clean up my act or suggest new process improvements. A new tip for others in looking for that perfect business or for the perfect mix of the businesses that you want to be involved in is that you need to be sure that it is in line with your long terms goals or your personal brand. For me, I thought of cleaning up and letting go of certain businesses since these aren’t aligned anymore with the direction that I want for my personal brand. It may be hard to let go of something that you love, but sometimes, you need to let go or focus on things that will help you achieve your long term goals.

Or sometimes, the vision that you set for your business doesn’t suddenly seem right anymore. This then requires a change in strategy. It’s not wrong to suddenly change your mind. We’re human beings so we have the freedom to change and make our own decisions. Just know that there are certain “effects” to these changes. Obviously for every cause there will have to be an effect. The effect may be something positive or negative. You just need to weigh all of these things and see what you’ll be happy with and what is more in line with what you want.

There are a lot of things that we need to talk about when it comes to business. If you have some topics in mind that you want me to discuss, please feel to comment below 🙂 I’d love to share my thoughts on these things (because honestly, right now, I have a gazillion things that I want to talk to you about). Just ask away!

For the other tips and realizations in creating a business, look for people who have the skills but also the same compassion (pagmamalasakit) that you have for the business idea or concept. Question the commitment of people who have the “can’t do” attitude rather than the “can do” attitude. I’ve worked with people like these before and these are people who are afraid of changes & improvements and are very close-minded. In a fast paced world like this, you need people who look for solutions rather than those who bring up “concerns” when faced with challenges. You need people who think outside of the box!

Are you stuck with a team who’s keeping the business from achieving its fullest potential? Share your thoughts below. What did you do? I’ve love to hear about it.

Legalities in Starting a Business

Starting a business nowadays can be a bit daunting, especially because one needs to understand the legalities in starting a business. I get a lot of inquiries in my Facebook page on what the steps are to register a business. Well, to give you a recap on the three main steps or government institutions that you have to go through, these are the DTI or SEC, the Local Government/Municipal Hall and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

I have written interesting articles in this blog, which I hope would help you register:

Opening a Sole Proprietorship Business: DTI Process

Opening a Sole Proprietorship Business In Taguig: Municipal Hall Process

BIR Deadlines for Single Props and Corporations

For those who want someone who can explain all of these steps and to explain further about other legalities that you should need to know as a businessman/entrepreneur, I highly suggest that you attend these two workshops:

BIR Deadlines for Single Props and Corporations

I have finally have a legal business. I actually had it since May of this year. This is one of my goals for 2013. I have had businesses before, but this is my first sole prop business (I am part of corporations and had a partnership business before).

A lot of mompreneurs get stuck in this stage. We all want to put up our own businesses but we all think that it is such a hassle to go through the registration process with the government’s different departments. Well, the basic steps are…
1) Go to DTI or SEC. In my case, since it’s a single proprietorship, I went to DTI. You can read all about the steps that I underwent when I applied for certification.
Opening a Sole Proprietorship Business: DTI Process

2) Go to your municipal hall. This has to be the municipal hall of your place of business. I registered with the Taguig local government. You can read all about it here: Opening a Sole Proprietorship Business In Taguig: Municipal Hall Process

3) And the last step was to go to your BIR RDO. Remember that your personal TIN should be transferred to the RDO of your place of business. There are forms that you have to fill out (ex. 1901 Application for Registration, etc.) and fees that you have to pay. After submitting all of the requirements, you have to remember all of your deadlines for reports. I have attached this guide from our RDO. Deadlines of the BIR are all the same anyway. I hope this helps you.

I’m excited for The WAHMeo Series: Brand and Build Your Online Biz! In this workshop, Business Registration and Taxes will be discussed by Fitz Villafuerte. Fitz Gerard Villafuerte is a civil engineer who decided to quit the corporate world back in 2003 to pursue entrepreneurship. Aside from running several traditional businesses, he also owns and manages an online store called Blogger Shirts (www.bloggershirts.com) and a microjob marketplace called 199Jobs (www.199jobs.com). His blog, entitled Ready To Be Rich (www.fitzvillafuerte.com), is currently the Best Business and Finance Blog in the country as recognized by the Philippine Blog Awards.
