All about Coding and What Stops us from Learning New Things

As you may have heard, I am part of three teams / companies that are creating mobile applications. Oh, I am not a techie person, and my I don’t have any IT experience, except blogging (if you even consider basic HTML commands as valid IT experience). What I know though is that technology is and will continue to change industries and lives of people. I believe in that and that is the reason why I want to be part of this industry — to make disruptive changes.

For one of the tech companies that I am involved in, from the time we started, we didn’t have any tech partner. It has been a source of lots of problems. The major concern is that we have been delayed with our launch because of this, but fortunately, we found a new partner / provider that can help us develop an upgraded version of the app.

Having this problem has made me and my friend (also with a marketing background) think about learning programming and coding. We are both ladies, who have no experience in programming (oh except the time in HS where we had basic programming and we would copy our classmate’s work), and the only reason why we want to learn how to code is to know more about it. We know that we can’t be experts and it may even take time before we can develop our own application, but having the knowledge of how it’s done can help us explain better what we want to our partners and providers.

Right now, I’m learning Python, since this is what my husband (who by the way is an excellent programmer) said I should start with.

Python.001

I’m 39% done, but I must say that this has made me realize a lot of things. It made me think of what stops us from learning new things. One of the things that I realized is that it takes a certain passion and patience to continue on and to learn. There are so many distractions and it takes someone with a certain level of persistence to finish courses and even to finish a chosen book.

A tip that I have gotten from this experience is find that single reason why you want to learn. It may be to improve your business, to improve your career, to impress others, to impress a loved one — any thing. This will be enough motivation for you to keep on learning. My personal motivation is because a lot of the things that I am doing now requires at least a basic understanding of coding or programming. This is why I am being a patient student and I’m trying to learn everything I can.

What will motivate you to learn? Find that motivation and embrace learning!

Learn a Little Every Day with 365 Days of Learning

I was in the shower a while ago and something really bothered me. We all know that learning in general is good for us, since we get to ‘grow’. We know that learning something new everyday is something that we should turn into a habit, but what stops us? For the attendees that we have for Manila Workshops, it is interesting to note that some are repeat attendees and these are the people who I often see and get to know more of. Like them (probably), I personally see the value in striving for knowledge and new learnings on a daily basis.

What stops us from making learning a habit? One thing that I could think of is that we think learning needs to be in a structured environment, but it shouldn’t be. We don’t just learn in school, or even during workshops. We learn through conversations. We learn through the shows we watch, through recordings and podcasts that we listen to. We learn through going to networking events and when we meet new people. We learn through different platforms.

Love Learning

Another thing is that we say that we don’t have time to learn new things. The thing is, learning is really easy to incorporate into our lives. We just have to make it a habit. For example, when we commute or ride the car going to work, why not listen to a podcast or a recording. When going out for coffee during lunch break, why not read an ebook?

There are so many lessons to be learned. My team came up with this idea of helping you learn a little everyday from different people in the metro. This project called 365 Days of Learning aims to help you instill that habit of learning. We want you to discover a whole new world by discovering the love for learning.

Here are some of the lessons that we have already posted:

One Word 2013: Learn

It took a while before I could finally decide on what my one word was going to be this year. Finally, I have decided on a word that will encapsulate everything that I am planning to do and achieve this year. I chose the word…

Learn

My one word 2013 is LEARN

Why LEARN?
After a conversation with a friend last night, I realized that one of the things that I want to focus on this year is learning, creating avenues for learning and sharing my learnings with others (over probably a cup of coffee… thus the coffee stain in the poster). I realized that a lot of my goals and plans for this year and even my life list have a lot to do with learning.

LEARNING in the Family…
I’m about to be a mom and I know that I can’t be a perfect parent or wife, but this year, I will try my darn best to learn and strive to be a good parent and a loving wife. I’ll strive to learn as much as I can by attending workshops, reading books and even trying out things that I have never done before (make an effort to learn cooking…). I will also try to learn more about breastfeeding through others and through personal experience. I will be patient and really try to breastfeed until Zeeka is 2 years old.

LEARNING with Friends…
I will actively pursue creating workshops for ManilaWorkshops.com (even those that I will offer for free: I was thinking of a free Photoshop workshop) so as to help friends and acquaintances learn with me. I want to bring inspire other people to continue learning.

LEARNING more about my Faith…
I will learn to be more spiritual. I have started reading passages from the Bible again and I have started praying every evening, too, with my husband. I promise to learn more about the origins of the Catholic religion, which my hubby, is so fascinated by.

LEARNING from mistakes…
I will go for things that I have not done before. I want to seek new challenges and learn from these. If I fail, I want to learn and share what I have gone through with others.

By the end of 2013, I know that if I stick true to living my word, which is to LEARN, I know that I will have had a fruitful, productive and well-lived year.

What’s your one word for this year? BTW, i’m linking this to One Word 365 Community.

Love,

Mommy Ginger
