Lotte Xylitol Smile Champions!

I taught Zeeka something last week. I taught her how to laugh! Haha! I taught her how to ‘fake laugh’. Check out the video below.

She’s really growing up so fast. Last week, we had our first visit to the pediatric dentist. Zeeka had to have her teeth cleaned. Our pedia advised us to go to the dentist now that Zeeka is 1 year old. Upon arriving (BTW, we went to the iSmile Clinic at Bonifacio Global City), the dentist talked to me and explained everything at the lobby area before going into the clinic for the procedure. When we entered, as expected, she cried since everything was new to her. I had to sit on the chair and have her sit on my lap. I had to hold her hands, as she was struggling to get out. The dentist cleaned her teeth and also applied fluoride to prevent cavities. Then she wasn’t allowed to eat for an hour after the procedure and no brushing of her teeth that evening.

Actually, during the conversation with the dentist, I was reminded of the things that I recently learned from the Lotte Xylitol event for the Mommy Bloggers. That was a fun event. It was just like a “bonding” event with the other mommy bloggers. I loved that it was just a ‘chill’ event  and I got to learn more about the other mommy bloggers. It wasn’t the typical press conference held by brands, but it was really an intimate gathering. It’s rare that a brand really takes time out to get to know the bloggers that they invite. It’s usually a one way conversation and they don’t really ask for ‘media’ or us, bloggers, to introduce ourselves.

After the get to know you portion part of the event, Dra. Fina, a pediatric dentist was invited to talk about caring for our child’s teeth. She told us that 9 out of 10 children in the Philippines suffer from tooth decay. The key points that I learned from the talk were:

Dra. Fina talking about how to care for your child's teeth

Dra. Fina talking about how to care for your child’s teeth

– Never to let Zeeka sleep without brushing her teeth. This should be the last activity that a child should do at night. This is hard from me since the last thing that she does is drink milk (I better change this asap!)

– Brush for at least two minutes for the fluoride to take effect. If you can just spit it out and not gargle, the better.

– Teach your child how to use the toothbrush by having her (or him) sit on your lap while brushing their teeth.

She also taught us what Xylitol is. For those who don’t know, Xylitol is a 100% natural sweetener first derived from birch trees in the 20th century. It actually is a sugar substitute but it also helps reduce the growth of cavity-causing Streptococcus mutans bacteria that leads to cavities. It is used in gum, like the Lotte Xylitol Dental Health Gum, to help prevent tooth decay.

The Lotte Xylitol Dental Health Gum is a sugar-free gum with over 50% xylitol as a sugar substitute. It reduces cavity-causing bacteria that feed on sugar and create acids that dissolve tooth enamel resulting in tooth decay. It promotes saliva flow to maintain healthy pH levels in the mouth to prevent demineralization of tooth enamel. It also helps remove stubborn tartar on teeth surfaces through the chewing action of the gum. It promotes remineralization or rebuilding of the teeth enamel through the presence of calcium phosphates and by promoting saliva production.

I’m a Lotte Xylitol Mom Brand Believer!

Growing up, I never went to the dentist on a yearly basis. My husband Ej on the other hand, was conscientious in keeping his appointments. I never really thought there was anything urgent about seeing a dentist. In my mind, my teeth were perfectly fine. I was gifted with a good and a strong set of teeth. I didn’t need braces (and during my childhood days, I thought this was the only reason one should go to the dentist). I was successful at having zero cavities (well not until I was in high school, I think).

Now that I have Zeeka, though, I am now more active in looking for information that would affect her growing up. I would research on medical data — stuff that I wouldn’t really care about. Even researches on taking care of one’s teeth and fighting cavities were on my list.

Moi (Mommy Ginger) and my her daughter, Zeeka

That’s how I ended up as a mommy brand believer for Lotte Xylitol!

I went to the briefing for the Make it Zero Campaign of the Lotte Xylitol Gum. During the briefing, I learned a lot from the invited speakers (dentists from the Philippine Dental Association), Dr. Fina Lopez and Dr. Angelo Fernandez. They were also joined by Mr. Soi Kitaguchi GM of Lotte Confectionery Pilipinas Corp and Therese Reyes of Lotte.

I learned that Lotte Xylitol is the first dental health gum in the Philippines and the only dental health gum  (I didn’t even know that a ‘dental gum’ existed) recognized by the Philippine Dental Association (PDA). It’s called a dental health gum because it contains more than 50% Xylitol, which helps reduce cavity-causing bacteria. These bacteria feeds on Xylitol, but since it isn’t sugar, these bacteria die. Xylitol also increased saliva flow that maintains the pH levels in the mouth. With this, it creates acids that stops demineralization or the dissolving of the tooth enamel which results in tooth decay. Xylitol stops plaque and dental cavities by 80%.

It also helps remove food particles that may be left behind in the mouth and helps remove stubborn tartar on teeth surfaces by promoting chewing action. It is effective in avoiding common dental problems such as bad breath and tooth decay. There are many positive effect of chewing a Lotte Xylitol Gum but of course, you still need to brush your teeth, floss, gargle and visit the dentist regularly.

The Make it Zero Campaign

I am part of the Make it Zero Campaign of Lotte Xylitol. Make it Zero is a campaign that encourages everyone, especially Filipino parents to commit to achieve zero cavities for them and their kids. The program does not only aim to increase awareness by educating parents through the school tours that Lotte Xylitol has been doing since 2009, but its aim is to encourage them to share their knowledge with their families and friends.
