The Essential Guide To Heading Off The Beaten Track

With coronavirus forcing us to adapt to a new normal, we have had to revolutionize many different aspects of our lives. Travel is no different. Less than six months ago you could have hot-footed it to wherever you wanted on the planet without a care in the world. Fast forward to today and you need to check out quarantine legislation, R rates, and temperature checks.

Travel has become more daunting for the ardent backpacker and the holiday-maker. This doesn’t mean that travel is off the cards forever. For the foreseeable future, we may be planning our trips rather than embarking on them, but in the near future, you will be able to take a jaunt overseas again. However, you may not want to be among the tourist crowds and the busy hotspots. Instead, you might want to venture somewhere off the beaten track to stay safe and reduce your risk of catching Covid-19. Take a look at this essential guide to help you head off the beaten track.

Look At A Map

When you plan a travel adventure overseas, the chances are you have an idea of where you want to go in the world. You might want to trek the Inca Trail in Peru, do some temple hopping in Kyoto, Japan or take a drive along Route 66 in the United States. To head off the beaten track successfully, you need to be close enough to activities and sites without being smack bang in the middle of them.

Our trip to Japan last 2017

If you are heading to Japan, Hiroshima is a must-see city. Where the atomic bomb dropped at the end of the Second World War, this city is full of history and optimism. It’s also busy. Instead of staying here, why not hotfoot it to the neighboring island of Miyajima. Beautiful, picturesque and idyllic, you are just thirty minutes away from the city, but you can stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan far away from the crowds. The floating shrines are stunning and there are some wild deer and monkeys to get to grips with. You might even want to scale Mount Misen to see the temple on the peak.

If you fancy Thailand, don’t head to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, and take a jaunt to Nonthaburi instead. The city is rarely visited by tourists, yet it’s not far from the stunning temple-laden Lat Phrao. You could even save money by finding a cheap house for rent in Nonthaburi rather than staying in an expensive hotel in the region. You can be somewhere less dense, stay for a longer period of time, and enjoy a quieter pace of life.

GPS

If you are planning on heading off the tourist trail, make sure that you have safety as your top priority. While you might love the idea of being free from the shackles of social media and off-grid, it is still prudent to have a smartphone and GPS device on you. If traveling solo is your thing, a GPS device is vital if your set of wheels breaks down or if you get lost. A quick lookup of your coordinates can help emergency services locate and rescue you.

Smartphones are also necessary for those just in case moments. You don’t have to be scrolling through Facebook every hour of your travels, but posting photos now and again and staying in touch with family is important to many travelers no matter where they are in the world.

Follow The Locals

If you are keen to see the authentic side of a destination, it’s not a good idea to go on tours set up for foreigners. You’ll see the bland and expensive face of a nation. Instead, follow the locals. If you want a great bowl of pasta in Rome, go where the Italians go. If you want some incredible dumplings in Beijing, forget following the Americans and venture where the Chinese go. They may not look the most salubrious of restaurants, but the best and most authentic eateries rarely are.

To help you stay off the beaten track, you need to converse with the locals. This means you need to commit to learning a little bit of language. Doing this will help you earn the respect of the locals. There’s nothing more embarrassing than shouting slowly in English, expecting a local to understand you. It’s arrogant. Don’t do it. Instead, be a responsible and caring traveler, learning some of the lingo, making friends with the locals, and finding some hidden gems.

Heading off the beaten track can be exciting. Follow this guide and you can stay safe while traveling in a post-pandemic age.

#BOUNCEBACKFORBUSINESS: Sarap Mag Biyahe (SMB) Travel and Tours Bacoor

One of the industries that’s greatly affected by the pandemic is the travel industry. Our local travel and tours business in the country will need your support after all of these. One of the MSMEs that I have talked to is Sarap Mag Biyahe (SMB) Travel and Tours – Bacoor Branch Services.

SMB Travel Bacoor usually offer Airline Ticketing (Phils. & International Destinations), Hotel Booking (Phils. & International Destinations), Sightseeing Tours (Phils. & International Destinations), Theme Park Tickets (Phils. & International Destinations), Travel Insurance (Phils. & International Destinations), Visa Assistance (Korea, Japan, China, Dubai, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Schengen, Turkey), Pocket Wifi Rental (Phils. & International Destinations), Car, Van, Mini-bus, Bus Rental (Phils. & International Destinations), Phils. & International Tours (FIT/Groups, Customized Tour Packages), Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions/ Events (M.I.C.E) Conference and Team Building / Company Excursion / Company Outing.

The have just recently started their business last February 8, 2019. Like most of these travel agencies, they earn service fee from the transactions.

Due to this crisis, they had to close their office. They haven’t gotten any sales since they have been no operations (No Sales) since President Rodrigo Duterte declared flight cancellations for one month.

SMB Travel Bacoor wishes that we could all help them out. We could help them and other travel agencies by not canceling our trips when we have bookings. Let’s just change the travel dates and save tourism!

“Many of us in Travel Industry might start with nothing if you cancel your trips. Save your desire to travel and let us assist you still after this challenge we all have right now. Another thing is and this is a fact, due to numerous requests, airlines will be taking up to 3 months to process refunds. But as we coordinate with them, changing the travel dates is allowed until June 30, 2020,” they said.

SMB Travel Bacoor continues on to assure us that we don’t need to change your travel dates and there is no need to rush in deciding when to travel again. SMB Travel says that they will be awaiting for your new travel dates.

This is good to know since I know that most of us will be raring and daring to travel once we wipe out and win over this Corona virus.

They also mentioned that this is the time that they are doubling up on their marketing efforts. They are also offering promo packages.

When asked about the lessons that they have learned from this pandemic, SMB Travel says that all businesses should save up as a contingency plan.

For future bookings, you can contact Sarap Mag Biyahe (SMB) Travel and Tours – Bacoor Branch Services via FB messenger (https://www.facebook.com/smbtravelbacoor) or email.

For now, stay at home and stay safe!

Life is About Balance: Encouraging Study-Life Balance

We all strive for balance in anything that we do, because we all know that life is about balance and moderation. Even as a parent, we all want to look for that balance. I am very conscious about how I deal with my child as a parent. I don’t want to feel like i’m not being enough of a parent to my daughter, but I don’t want to hover over every move, too (just like what Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford shares in this video). But as a parent, finding that balance and guiding our children to find that balance is hard!

This summer I enrolled my daughter at her own school (since they were offering summer classes), McDonald’s Kiddie Crew, gymnastics and math classes. Believe me, I wasn’t over parenting. I did this because she clamoured for it. She kept asking me for activities to do. We told her that we’ll just do some stuff at home, and she said she wanted activities outside the house!

My little lady who’s off to school 🙂

With this, it got thinking about study-life balance. In this environment that we live in now, everything seems to be so cut throat. Competition here and there, and there doesn’t seem to be any room for relaxation. But relaxation and taking things easy is important. Living life AND enjoying it is something that we tend to forget. Since we forget that this should be the case, and that relaxation and enjoyment is actually crucial for self- awareness and self-development, we as parents tend to pass on the same expectations to our kids.

We make a list of what they should know and be doing at a certain age. We make unnecessary goals for them in our mind, and if they don’t meet those goals, we push them further or blame ourselves for not being the parent that we should be. I think what we need to help them with or help ourselves with is that we need to encourage study life balance. Our kids need to put enough effort into academics, but at the same time, we need to encourage them to have fun and relax at certain moments in their lives.

How do we encourage Study-Life Balance?

Keep things stress-free by having a time for relaxation.

Oftentimes, we keep track of the time that they spend for homework or studying. But, we don’t keep track of the time that they spend playing outdoors, time spent reading a book or just writing anything that they want, time spent going to the mall or watching a movie with family and friends. Let’s try to keep study time within “study time”. Let’s also monitor that our children get to see the sun and breathe fresh air.

See to it that your children get enough sleep.

We all know that sleep makes everything better. It helps the body return to that state of equilibrium. We need it and our kids need it, too!

Praise them not for achieving goals, but praise them for the Process or for “Being”

We’ve learned that we should praise our children not for getting high grades, but for trying or focusing or for the discipline that they show. We’ve learned to praise our daughter, too, not only for finishing her homework, but for discovering new things or being observant about things not related to studying or practicing her letters and numbers (she’s only 4, btw). We also praise her for day to day interactions like when she’s courteous to someone or when she exudes confidence, etc.

Travel to Learn; Discover things outside the Home or Classroom

Travel opens your children to new learnings. This is why I love Boardwalk, because this May, they have a Back to School Shop and Win Promo where participants can get a chance to win a trip to Hong Kong for four! The lucky winner of the Back to School Shop and Win Promo can take their family to see the breathtaking view of the city’s skyscrapers, glittering harbor and green hills at The Peak and have a taste of Hong Kong’s cuisine at the Temple Street Night Market. Boardwalk will take care of your flight and your 3-day/2-night accommodation for your family.

What I love about what Boardwalk is doing is that the winning family will have time to learn from this trip. They will see Hong Kong’s most popular tourist spots such as the historical Clock Tower, the popular Golden Bauhinia Square, and the Avenue of Stars where the most celebrated moments in Asia’s movie industry can be relived. They all can go shopping, too, and even admire one of the world’s most spectacular skylines while taking a stroll along the waterfront at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade.

What i’ve noticed with my daughter, too, is that she doesn’t forget trips like these. She clearly remembers our Universal Studios Singapore experience! So for the winning family, I’m sure your children won’t forget this trip since all 4 members of the family will be given an all-day access ticket to Hong Kong Disneyland!

It’s nice to prepare and be in Back to school mode, but it’s even nice to cap summer off with this wonderful trip. Check out the details and mechanics on how you can make your 2017 summer an unforgettable one at www.boardwalkshop.ph.

*A single-receipt online purchase of Back to School items worth P1,000 qualifies as one raffle entry. Promo is valid from April 17 to July 17, 2017.

Again, encourage study-life balance and let your child discover the world, enjoy and live it. Life is about balance! Even with that checklist of goals in our mind that we think they need to accomplish, it’s better that we let them create their own goals and dreams and just lead them down the path where they will discover these themselves.
