We had a meeting yesterday with the original creator and author or Zuma. I’m not sure if you, my readers, still know who Zuma is, but he’s the classic Filipino comic character that we have with snakes on his neck. This is the wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuma_(comics). This comic character was created by Jim Fernandez in 1976. It was truly an honor to be in the same room as him!
In the meeting, I was with my friend and business partner, April, and we were asking him about how he created all these different comics and the stories behind it. We just found out that his creation was not only Zuma, but he had a long cabinet filled with original works and different comics that he created years ago. The meeting with him was an eye opener for me.
In this line of business, I get to meet a lot of people and these people are amazingly talented. The sad thing is that we never hear of these talented and gifted people. Talking about illustrators and comic artists, I’m sure there are a lot of talented individuals and we just don’t get to hear about them. So, if you have a gift that you want to share, please do share it with me! Please, please, please! I will be happy to tell the world about your talent.
So going back, I was thinking of his many works and these are valuable pieces of art. I know that ideas and work as valuable as these need to be trademarked or patented or copyrighted. And yes, there is such a thing as Intellectual Property Theft or IP Theft. To protect your work, Manila Workshops and LifeQuest have come up with this useful and IMPORTANT workshop on Intellectual Property. This coming April 16, join the discussion with IP expert – Atty. Sarah Suguitan, for the lowdown on Copyrights, Trademarks & other tips on how you can safeguard your business, creative ideas and products!
The workshop is at an affordable rate of Php 850 per person for the EARLY BIRD RATE! Sign up here: http://manilaworkshops.com/events/startup-hr-toolkit-intellectual-property-and-trademarks
With all of these things, I really hope that we create more original Filipino content. I’d love to sit down with the new breed of comic book artists, too, and check out their work! Just leave a comment when you want to meet up!
