The Freelance or Gig Economy

On the way home yesterday, I was listening to a podcast entitled The Future of Work. It focused on discussing the growing new economy called the freelance or Gig Economy. In this podcast, you will hear Redd Horrocks, a voice over artist on Fiverr, Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach, Director of the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution, Cori O’Steen, Founder and CFO of UPakNShip and Laura Chambers, Vice President of Consumer Selling at eBay.

Here is the copy of the Podcast:

When we hear the word freelance or gig, we don’t think that this type of thing can last. Even when the word Freelancing is thrown into the picture, we think all of these are just way to flimsy to rely on when it comes to making it a source of living for yourself and your family. But I actually know of a lot of people who live, eat, drink and breathe because they are deeply into the freelancing business.

In the Philippines, an event called The Freelancer Fair will be held on November 19, 2016. It was conceptualized, not only for the current freelancers in our country, but for those aspiring to be one and for those who want to understand the freelance economy. For those who want to know what or who exactly FREELANCERS are, they are actually professionals. By definition, professionals are those who use their talent and skill to earn. Yes, this is what we want to stress that freelancers are actually professionals.

And with The Freelancer Fair, we want to show the world (not only the Philippines, mind you) that there are a lot of Filipinos who are talented at what they do and hiring freelancers for your business or corporation is an option. We want to teach freelancers how to manage their freelancing business. We want for them to know how to sustain this business. For those who aspire to be freelancers, we want to show them also how to enter this freelance economy.

The Freelancer Fair is something so close to my heart. One of my missions is to help people in this ecosystem and to help our economy by advocating for more jobs via freelancing. I really hope that you can make it and listen to the talks of our speakers. The complete list of speakers are:
